A cool thing I found in the Lost Encyclopedia was the Letter of Truce formed between Goodspeed and Richard. For these two being separately known as a pretty chill bros, they clearly do not want to share the island. Add rocky relations with repeated truce violations, and you have an impending purge.
First, the Dharma Initiative was instructed not to drill any more than ten meters into the ground. I doubt what their drilling in the Swan site was any less than ten meters. That was a big hole. Then the truce stated that the DI's "term of residency will last no longer than fifteen years," starting from 1973. In 1992, four years after their term was over, the Dharma Initiative was still around. They weren't leaving, so I guess the Others made them leave. Forever.
Also, Ben wanted his father dead and the plans for the Purge were convenient. Of course he supported it wholeheartedly. Widmore seemed to have been a key player in planning the Purge. And when you have Ben agreeing with Widmore, you know that several people are gonna die.
But I do wonder why the Dharma Initiative refused to leave when their term was over. We know that Horace was still around at the time and the Others must've tried to get them to leave once it was 1988. At the time of the Purge, initiative members were just derping around, playing lawn volleyball. It didn't look like they were forming an army to take down the Others.
