Either this: I thought that maybe a sunken island a part of their fantasy world, a part of their desires or something that would help them get over their issues and give them closure.
The idea that HALF OF THIS SEASON was a Hurley Afterlife Party Planning Meeting, oh my god. Where’s Patrick Duffy when you need him, in a towel?"
"If I look at a pile of crap, and say that I don’t like it, that doesn’t mean I don’t understand it. I understand the pile of crap just fine. I just don’t like piles of crap."
I took it as they just all wished the island away. Like, they did not want to meet there as their afterlife; they wanted something not that place. So even a church will do. ;)
The idea, though, that the island was also dead is interesting, though. I like that.
I also think that they wanted a big wtf? moment for the premiere. Plus, I think they needed to set up right away that, in the sideways, more than just the crash had changed. Which, obviously, makes sense now that we know what the sideways really is.
Of wanting the island to exist in that world too, but more like as just a mark of their past in it, a decoration on the map. This island is something that should exist, but only as a part of their lives' map, something that has ceased to be but still there somewhere.
Oh! It could also act as the wooden tap from which the sideways-afterlife story of their journey towards their realisations start (for some, not for all). A finger from which the rubber-band is released. *LOL*
That could be also included in what the island is now to them; it's not the only possible reason for me. :)

"Hey, I kind of like the idea of a Hurley Afterlife Party, but only as an epilogue.

Yeah, I agree with this.

And the island didn't need them, there's no light to protect once you're death.
