this episode had critical information, but (like i said in the discussion post last night), it would have been SO MUCH BETTER as flashbacks last season.
in the beginning of the season, we see two young boys and their mother who don't know of a world outside the three of them and the island. eventually they discover the other people and one begins to question their upbringing and world views. we're introduced to the glowy cave of pure wonderful magical life and we might buy it. we see the one as an adult living with "the others" (we would have figured it out by then) and trying to get off the island.
at some point in the middle of the season, we see their mother helping a stranded young woman to give birth. the young woman names one jacob (we all go "WAIT WHAT WHAT OMG THAT'S JACOB?!?!?!"). then the mother kills the young woman to presumably take her babies (again, we all go "WAIT WHAT THAT'S NOT EVEN THEIR REAL MOTHER? WHAT IS GOING ON WHO ARE YOU?").
towards the end of the season, we see the runaway twin finalizing his plans to leave the island when he is confronted by his mother. she kills him (audience: "WHAT OMG"). jacob confronts his brother and then floats him down river to the glowy life force (audience: "WHAT IS HAPPENING?"). the smoke monster comes out (we wouldn't know at this point that the smoke monster was human, so it could have been seen as an offering of some point, leading us to believe that smokey is maybe good). jacob finds his brother's body (smokey got him awww :'( ) and buries him with his mother and two stones in the caves (audience: "HOLY WHAT IT'S ADAM AND EVE OMG OMG OMG K;JAJAS;LKJFS").
season finale would stay as it was, to kind of close up the loose ends of their story.
sigh. so much good information just played out in a really awkward and lame way. all of S5 could have set up the mythology of the island, and then S6 could be used to HAVE SHIT HAPPEN.
i wrote a novel but idc i think my way is better lol.
yeah ia. again, i liked all the info they gave us, but it could have fit neatly into S4.
give richard a centric, and then at the end of it you have hurley say "she says you can't let him leave". boom. lost.
and we all would have assumed she meant Jack, since he was the one so hell bent on leaving at that point. but no, TWIST, she meant the smoke monster! which we would have figured out eventually.
Yeah I like that better especially mixing up the timeline. That would be pretty Lost.
But I also think they could have cut some scenes like the Adam and Eve stuff way shorter but maybe that was because I was spoiled and I thought everyone must have had it figured out even before the showed the flashback of Lock, Kate and Jack finding them.
Yeah, I'm wondering why the golden glory hole just made me bust out laughing with its reveal whereas in the season 4 finale I was totally accepting of this random-ass donkey wheel that came out of fucking nowhere. Though I don't know if they had revealed it earlier it would have been less hilarious or awkward.
i think it would have felt at least less rushed. like it came off last night as "uhhhhhhhhhh we have three episodes left to explain this wtf are we gonna do?! oh ok! magic golden glory hole! they'll buy it!". it it had been introduced sooner it would have felt a little more planned out imo.
with the donkey wheel we were so caught up in the character part of it. Ben! OMG, we had Ben and Locke being the odd couple and at the same time Ben going through this huge emotional thing with feeling betrayed and wanting to prove himself and "I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY NOW JACOB"

Whereas the whole scene with the golden glory hole was totally flat.
From a writing perspective: with the donkey wheel we were shown; with the glory hole we were told. Bad writers!
Of course, I'm sure that the actors could totally pull off a scene where Ben takes Jack to the donkey wheel and says hey, look at that, isn't that strange? Why yes, what is it? It's a vague msytery shrouded in mysticism, John. O I C, can I touch it? No. No you may not.
But that's just because Memerson and Terry O'Quinn rule all.
