MiB is not truly evil, despite Darlton's best efforts. He and Ben are the most interesting and sympathetic characters on the show, despite a stockpile of bad actions that keep getting asked for by every douchenozzle around them.
Also, Jacob is an asshat.
Candidates for the island need an instruction manual, because oral tradition from the original Lady Rousseau of the Clan Rousseau is just not cutting it. It's the Cult of Unclear Speaking. They could probably radiate world peace from that island if someone's communication ability would unfuck itself.
Jacob had the statue made because of his giant screaming mommy issues, despite the fact that the island has no quarries and there must have been some crazy time slingshotting to get that sucker made. Also, Tawaret is a fucked up giant ripped male to match up with Jake's fucked up mother. Sense, they make no, and together make perfect sense.
Also, Jacob is an asshat. I feel that's important. He's whiny, self-absorbed, has low self-esteem, needy, and therefore the savior of the island is totally Jack.
WRONG! Jack was supposed to loved but only in the beginning and then hated in the mid part and then loved again once he redeemed himself. This is the process of a hero. As far as Kate, yea idk. Bitch sucks.

Yeah and I think Jacob's brother/MIB/Smokey actually gained a lot of sympathy in this episode. I mean his mother was crazy.
And Jacob was kind of a jerk I agree. I know people said he has reasons to like his mother loving his brother more but he just came across as very whiny especially in the scene where the mother gives him the magic wine or whatever so he can become the protector and he gets scared.
I want to watch this show with my sister because she's totally the Jacob and I'm totally the MIB and my paranoid schizoid dad is totally "Mother" and I really want to know whether my sister likes Jacob or MIB.
Yes I'm letting my personal issues seep into a public post but that's cool. I ain't got no secrets. That this entire show is about awful parenting is both cheap (because most people can relate and it's therefore an easy way to go) and also effective (because most people can relate and it's therefore an easy way to go) is an endless source of frustration for me.
But to get back to points you and I find mutually relevant: I think that Smokey took MIB's body or spirit or some kind of thing to manifest into and that they are not 100% the same thing. I think this because under the temple the Egyptian-style art -- which pre-dates the Roman civ setting of "Across The Sea" -- is all about this smoke character. So people have been plopped on this Island and have known that this entity was there BEFORE a bunch of Latin-speaking people plopped there and two twins were born.
This Smoke Monster thing is old old old and I guess bad? But like we've said a zillion times before: HOW BAD COULD IT BE? Humans have done all of the awful things anyone could ever do. Even the unimaginably sci-fi awfulness that occurs on Doctor Who or Fringe or whatever doesn't trump the Holocaust and Vietnam and Rwanda and Darfur. So... yes, social commentary time: Sci-fi needs to work its ass off to try and find something that the audience can really see as "bad" when we've already seen it all.
What the fuck was this comment? Anyway.... back to studying/watching Parks & Rec on Hulu.
Maybe that's part of why the timeline fucks me over so badly. Okay, so the Egyptian stuff may have preceded Jake and Sexpants. THAT makes sense. I don't know why we didn't get a single shot of the temple or the statue to clarify that, but to make it so that the Monster was an entity that absorbed and adopted Sexpants' identity as its new one after getting uncorked makes a lot of sense.
At that point, shit, you can even throw Egyptian mythology back into the mix by discussing the release of Apep, the shapeshifting of Ammit, or the schemes of Set.
BUT THEY DIDN'T DO ANY OF THAT AUGH OMG FUCK ME AGH. GIVE ME THE WHEEL, DARLTON, I'M TAKING OVER.

From Lostpedia: In ancient times, some of these early inhabitants built the Smoke Monster a chamber beneath the Temple and devised a method of summoning him. An engraving portraying him with Anubis suggests they considered him a deity, and hieroglyphs outside his summoning chamber read "to summon protection," suggesting they considered him a guardian.
I guess I agree, I think all this evil comes from the combination of the great power the smoke monster has and the fact that someone entered the cave of the ~magic light. MIB's desire to leave the island is not an evil thing per se and apparently the smoke monster was initially considered as a guardian and not necessarily as sth evil.

Man, that's what I've been saying. It's a chump's job, and Jack is the chumpiest chump to ever chump.
