Despite last night's episode lack of exciting things, how do you think it sets up for the last three and a half hours? Do you think it sets it up at all, or do you think it was just Darlton trying to fill some time?

I did not get the feeling that this episode was necessary this late in the game. Like I can't see how that set up anything to come immediately after. It could have been earlier. Or it could have been flashback.

Also I can't imagine how Darlton could be down with filler episodes when there are so many other things that need to be answered / so many cast members to fit in to the last three and a half hours. I mean, this was filler, but it was necessary.

Does anyone know who is directing the penultimate?

According to wiki, Jack Bender is directing.

YESSS.
Bender is the only one who knows how to direct death scenes.

I'm just crossing my fingers. I know I'll love this show forever no matter what but I hope with this background information maybe it'll be easier for us. Or something.

Maybe they're like "Bro, almost all the episodes have to suck because the finale is going to blow these fuckers mindsss" and we'd be all, "Omg how did we ever doubt youuuuu!!!!!!!!!!111"

Basically this. I can't imagine how knowing they were brothers and that MIB was cooler than Jacob would help us deal with the fact that MIB just killed off four castmembers.

lol like with S3, I was like "This season is kinda meh with the exception of a couple episodes" and then the finale was fucking AMAZINGGGGGGGG.

I feel like it set things back TBH, because of the whole Is Smokey Evil thing. That question was supposed to be answered in the previous episode, and bringing back the question and confusing the issue now is a big part of why I think the episode put an awkward halt to the momentum. Of course, Lost has had this problem in all the seasons (maybe with the exception of S1?).

God, exactly. Going by last night Jacob is just a little crybaby punk.

I think this episode was horribly misplaced. Had it been earlier this season, or even in a prior season, I think I would be like omfg epic kljsd;lkjsdf. But where it was placed felt really off to me. I'm sure it is setting things up for the finale in some way, especially with Jacob/MIB/The Island, but I think it would have been more effective earlier.

Heh, my comment after yours is saying almost the opposite. I think if they had told us a lot of this any earlier, we'd lose the sense of mystery around Jacob/MIB/the Island, and that was really a driving force behind the show. But I do agree that it was a terribly timed episode. The story was interesting, had answers, and was stuff we needed/wanted to know, but not at this point in the game.

"we'd lose the sense of mystery around Jacob/MIB/the Island, and that was really a driving force behind the show."

Yeah that's true...but at the same time there is still so much mystery/unanswered questions surrounding those 3 that I think they could have kept the show going. Maybe. Who knows lol. This show, I swear :)

Lol, true. For as much as their motivations were explained, there's a lot that's been left unanswered. Like, what the magical unicorn fairy dust light is. Or when and how Jacob learned to be cool and pretend he didn't have Oedipal issues.

I really enjoyed the episode (mainly because I liked learning about early Jacob, but it's now left this huge gap where I don't know how he came all cool), but when there's only a few episodes left it felt a bit of waste of critical time. If it was earlier in the season, I would have enjoyed it more. I felt the same with the Richard ep.

I agree that it feels unnecessary this late in the game, but at the same time, giving us this backstory any earlier would have taken away from the mystery of Jacob/MIB/the island, which doesn't make for good storytelling. I don't think it was filler, exactly, just because this was something we all wanted to know, and it was relevant to the characters' motivations (as opposed to say, the story of Jack's tattoos). It's really only filler in the sense that at this point, with only a few hours left to go, we're all far more invested in the the original characters + Richard/Ben/Miles and episodes like this could have been time spent on their stories.
