I'm going to be serious for a moment:

I think that Des is going all Jacob on people. So he is moving throughout this new world doing things that might seem super fucking unnecessary to us, but is actually for the Losties own good. I'm honestly going to reserve a lot of judgment until I see the next ep.

I also think that Widmore is going to end up endgaming Flocke by sacrificing Des.

So now the question is whether or not Desmond is going to be stuck on that island as the new protector. He wasn't a candidate after all, so why would he be doing Jacob's work instead of one of them? Jacob never even spoke to him, so he can't be a Jacob's lackey like Ilana either.

Des is doing some Jacob-esque shit, but I think his mission might be bigger than Jacob/MIB's little game.

I don't think Desmond is necessarily the new Jacob, but it's like he became enlightened like Jacob perhaps was. He sees the big picture.
