I opened my MSN and found a link to an interview with Nestor (today in Latin America's AXN "Ab Aeterno" is premiering).
Here's a translation of it, it has some SPOILERS, but really minor ones.
Periodismo.com: Richard Alpert is a kind of "LOST"s secrets keeper, he is the charcter who's been on the island the longer and knows all of its secrets. Despite this, you didn't have much participation in the six seasons, do you think your character could have used more episodes, or it ws simply the way the producers had to preserve the mistery for which the series is well known?
Nestor Carbonell: I don't think I needed another episode. I have really liked doing this character because it wasn't till now that I actually knew who this man was, and to do this episode has been a great experience as an actor and as a fan of the show. I loved the mistery of the character, and to discover that despite his key position on the island, he isn't the one in charge. We discover things as far as the power chain on the island, and his personal tragedy which brought him to this place. But I don't think I needed another episode to explain who he was. I always knew I would have my moment to expose how he came to the island and why he didn't age, but I never thought it'll be a whole episode.
Periodismo.com: You say that you din't have information about your character's background till the moment you did this episode, how was it building Richard's profile without knowing a thing about his past?
Nestor Carbonell: We never get much of their back stories, to protect the mistery of the series and that's why it was a different experience for me as an actor, cause I had to use my imagination.
Periodismo.com: How had you pictured this character's arrival to the island?
Nestor Carbonell: I thought he had been born there, but I had no idea why he didn't age. I thought it was one of the island's properties and I created around it a whole fake story that I bought. But I was very wrong. The good thing about the script writers is that though they don't give you much info about the character, they guide you emotionally on how you have to be and your taks as an actor narrows to writing your own biography.
Periodismo.com: Do the script writers talk with the actors to fill in blanks of the story, or do you just execute what they give you?
Nestor Carbonell: We got a specific script. Despite actors and writers not seeing each other, when they see the show they capture how everything is going and there's a kind of relation formed there.
Periodismo.com: What was your reaction when you first heard the reason why Richard didn't age?
Nestor Carbonell: I had no idea about it till a week before we started shooting, but I loved it once I read it: the writers took a mythical character and gave him a personal touch, it was fantastic.
Periodismo.com: How is your relation with the fans, do they believe that you do not have answers to the LOST questions?
Nestor Carbonell: The fans of the show are impressive, it's people of all ages. "LOST" has reached many people, specially very intelligent viewers, that are interested in every single detail. But when they ask me I just say that I only know what I have read and I'm only a few episodes ahead of them. It's hard for them to understand that, in fact, I don't know a thing about the last episode, despite us being filming the last part of the series, the last pages of the script hasn't been delivered. As you see, the mysteries are locked.
Periodismo.com: The biggest fear among LOST fans is that after all the expectations generated over these years, the final answer will not live up to it. Is there a way to outdid the expectations of all these years?
Nestor Carbonell: The writers and producers had done a great job and, though I don't know about the last pages, what I have read is incredible and will answer big questions. The 15th episode, about to come, is amazing, and will answer a lot of myth questions. This season puts together everything we've done in the previous ones.
Periodismo.com: What end would you have given to LOST?
Nestor Carbonell: I'll be completely honest with you, I haven't read the whole thing, but for what I had, I have no doubts that it's the way resolution the series could have.
Since it was getting a bit spoilery, I'll sum up the rest:
* He says that answers about The Man in Black are coming.
* It's the first time he performed in spanish on TV, and he loved the experience and hopes to get more projects in spanish in the future.
* He says that what he'll miss the most from LOST is working with such amazing scripts, it's a luxury to be part of such hit show that breaks all the standards as far as telling and developing a story goes.
* He doubts that anything could ever recreate the sucess of LOST, saying that everything was in the right place, and copying the show isn't ag ood idea.
* He finishes saying that working in LOST was a fulfilling experience as an actor and has opened doors for him. He's hoping to do more projects -of which he cannot talk- but he's hoping to develop those as soon as possible.
