But the Equalist foot soldiers are showing a few signs of Turok-Han syndrome-they started out as formidable opponents, but as the series goes along they seem to get less and less good at their jobs.

This is why I rolled my eyes when the air babies attacked. You're telling me 3 kids, all under the age of 14, with what I assumed was NO real world fighting experience, could take on a whole force of chi blockers with shock weapons? It was funny/cute, but it felt forced.

When he first appeared, you could understand where he and the other Equalists were coming from, but he’s quickly devolved from a character you could sympathize from into a monster, a boogeyman benders will someday tell their children about at night.I've felt this way for awhile, but not completely in regards to Amon. I wanted to know more about what got the Equalist movement started, about the conditions that led up to it. The show hasn't done a good job of this, only getting ONE episode where Tarrlock is abusing his power, and that's AFTER the Equalists have shown ( ... )

you could argue that the chi blockers didn't anticipate having to fight kids and made the error of allowing themselves to hesitate when the showed up. airbending is also one of the more dynamic and fast bending arts, it's pretty hard to get close to one. whenever tenzin's been taken out or when the equalists fight him they've used long range attacks (excluding when he was shocked in episode 6 but that was a surprise attack). take into consideration that airbending culture is still slowly being revived, most people wouldn't know how to counter airbending.

Hmmm true. At the time I think I was too distracted by Meelo's fart bending to think of those reasons.

Yeah, I thought it was weird, and then realized they might have been hesitating because they didn't want to fight kids. (Though I'm not sure what they would have expected to do with them since they were going to the probably famously named Air Temple Island that has airbender kids in it in the first place...)

Oh, true. I only really looked at how they would think to attack a child*, but yeah, air bending is pretty unknown to them.

*as in, children aren't exactly fair game, but then again, they also need to be taken in, but then again, they're CHILDREN, so...I don't think Chi Blockers are without heart, tbh. It's one thing to electrocute grown up benders (even if they've done nothing against non-benders in their lives), but children are still children.

This. What also helps me put it in perspective is that in Avatar, the fighters were children too, though a little older. Aang didn't have any real-world fighting experience before the pilot episodes either, and he was only two years older than Jinora.

ia. You would never try to knock-out gas an airbender, for example.

I think they just don't know how to deal with airbending yet. They move too fast for chi-blocking to work. In actual fights, Tenzin has only ever been taken out by robots and always outnumbered like 6 to 1.

My theory is that 1) they weren't expecting to fight kids and 2) they are not used to fighting airbenders in close quarters

Actually, I thought Amon attacking Tarrlock went a long way to making him a more sympathetic villain. Tarrlock may have been a bender, but he, like Azula was of the "crazy and needs to be taken down" variety. And his bending made him far more dangerous in that regard.

I don't care for all these rationalisations, it was a dumb scene. I just put it down to the show essentially being for kids, so w/e.

I mean, the Gaang were also quite young (though admittedly not as young as Meelo) when they defeated the Fire Nation and they led an entire army of Benders, not just a couple non-benders.

But they had been travelling and fighting for a few years before they reached that point. They were living in a life or death situation, unlike the airbabies. That toughens you up.
