It really sucks that they don't know yet. I know the ratings have been sinking and there is a lot to negotiate, but the least they could do was make sure the fate of the show was determined with enough time to leave fans with something other than "sort of a season sort of a series" finale cliffhanger.
Unless Ryan is pitching Glee turned into AHS for next season or something and won't back down ever, there's probably a 5% chance at most that the show doesn't get renewed for even a shortened 5th season.
We can "aaaahhhh, the ratings!" all we want but (barring a colossal fuckup from all involved parties) I really doubt Fox is going to pull the plug on something that's consistently still at ~2.0 when across the way, NBC is going to be forced to renew things pulling 1.1-1.3 on average. That it hasn't officially been renewed yet but they're still pushing onward with the season finale=Regionals cliffhangers (which supposedly was pitched alongside his ideas for season 5 not that long ago) just says they're working out the particulars for next season -- whether or not it be a full season, impending contract re-negotiations, etc. -- more than it being in any danger at all of actual cancellation.
Yeah, no worries. I mean, there's always a chance we'll be actually surprised and Fox pulls the plug outright (or makes Ryan retool it into something that isn't even recognizably Glee anymore) but TV By the Numbers, I think, has had it pegged as 'certain renewal' or 'likely renewal' for most/all of this season.
