I'm glad I didn't stay up after the 2nd halftime for the CRO vs POR game, from what I saw it really lacked quality. I feel bad for Croats, though. I heard Srna (their captain), whose father died a few days ago, collapsed crying after the end?
In slightly less sad news, it shouldn't surprise me that Lavezzi knows how to poke fun at himself, lol:

I'm so nervous about tonight's game. Even if ARG lose (although I hope they finally manage to win a title!!), I hope it's not by penalties again. Sometimes I really hate them.
it was so, so, SO bad. like it's one of the worst matches i've ever seen in my life AND i'm a milanista
but Portugal's progress so far is so stereotypically italian - doing strictly the bare minimum and somehow still manage to succeed - that i'm actually starting to believe now, lmao. (of course if last night's match had been played by Italy instead of Portugal, the foreign press would be lauding the 'brilliant tactical performance" and the team's "stunning resilience", god love them.)
Even if I wasn't Portuguese, I'd still want Portugal to win just to watch the meltdowns online. The sheer amount of vitriol directed at this team in general and at Ronaldo in particular is fucking ridiculous. You'd think they'd go around kicking children in the face or something.
I also fully expect everyone to go in on Rakitic's "The better team is going home. Portugal beat us by doing nothing, no one knew if they were on the pitch" or can we only work up outrage at players saying dumb shit when it's Ronaldo talking?
That being said, the match was god fucking awful and exactly what americans believe football to be. By ET I just wanted it to fucking end. I'm hoping at least some of the boredom can be explained by Portugal being tired--it's really ridiculous that a team that played in the last day of the group stages plays in the first day of the knockout stages. Yes, it's our own damn fault for finishing third, but it's still fucking ridiculous.

THIS. Portugal making it to quarters made so many people SO mad, it's giving me life. i was just reading the comments in The Guardian and having a laugh.
and no one will go in on Rakitic because Croatia were the hipster choice after Belgium and i've seen a lot of people actually making the same 'the better team lost' comment despite the fact THEY HAD ZERO SHOTS ON GOAL, lol.

He's also not Ronaldo, so that helps.
No one ~~ deserved~~ to win that match if you ask me. We were both equally terrible. Portugal scored. Croatia didn't. It wasn't offside, it wasn't a foul, it wasn't a handball, it went over the line. Croatia wasn't robbed. That's the fucking facts. And now we get to go to the quarter-finals and people get to get the fuck over themselves.
yup, exactly. how fab would it be to win it, though? like, 1 - 0 at 91' after a dreadful match, Pepe's assist & CR's goal. maybe slightly offside too, just for the hell of it. against... hmm, let's make it Germany, lol.
Man, but Ronaldo's athleticism really is something else. Look at our goal. He's the one who makes the initial pass to Renato Sanches, in front of our own goal, and then runs all the way towards Croatia's goal and you just know he only slowed down so he wasn't offside. Almost unbelievable that this happened in the 117th minute.
Also fuck the comms who said Nani messed up his shot, this was clearly a pass. Look at his footwork, look at how after passing his eyes never even flicker towards the goal and just stay locked on Ronaldo. Nani did exactly what he wanted to do and it was fucking gorgeous. Really good defense by their keeper at Ronaldo's initial shot, too. Croacia's defense should never have given Ronaldo that much space.
