Group Standings

Highlights From Yesterday
Ecuador vs. Haiti (4 - 0)
Already eliminated from the group, Haiti were put through the wringer again last night, this time at the hands of Ecuador. With this easy peasy win, Ecuador secured a quarterfinal berth and will face the US this Thursday. Excite!

Brazil vs. Peru (0 - 1)
Here's a lazy attempt to summarize the main talking points about Brazil following their loss to Peru which eliminated them from the Copa. The press has reminded us time and again that Brazil does not care about this year's Copa. With this year's Olympics on home soil, the CBF has prioritized winning the gold medal instead, a feat they have yet to achieve. With their main focus elsewhere, Dunga assembled and brought to the Copa a hybrid experimental squad missing some high-profile players. It may not be the A team, but this squad, with a handful of players any avid football fan will recognize, were still picked by many as the favorites to win its group.

Pre-kickoff, Brazil needed only a draw to advance. They were denied a draw by a dodgy goal springing from the arm of one of Peru's subs (the goal was allowed to stand after almost four minutes of consultation between the referee and his assistants!). While blame should be apportioned to the refereeing, Brazil's squad is still talented enough to not have to rely on the referee to seal a draw. Remember, Brazil failed to register a single goal against either Ecuador or Peru, reserving all their goals for their match against Haiti instead.

Kudos to Peru for topping Group B. At last year's Copa, they were the dark horse of that tournament, making it as far as the semifinals where they fell to Chile, the current Copa America holders. We will see on Friday how Colombia breaks down Peru's stubborn defense.
