So sad. Nowadays stories like that really get me, because my parents are 71 and 72. Granted, they both practically eat books, they're learning to use a computer (my mother with huge enthusiasm), and my father keeps writing essays about local history no one has yet discovered, giving tours to tourists, and being shoved into leadership position in local societies... but there's no guarantee that something isn't going to suddenly hit them.
For the non-Germans: The article says that he has had it for some time, and the media and the public have protected him. And his doctor is quoted as saying: "With the great support of his wife and the exemplary loyalty of FC Bayern, it was possible to perfectly integrate Gerd Müller into the club's life for many years. In spite of obvious signs of his illness he was treated with sympathy and great respect by the Bayern family, the fans, and the media." And he says that that kind of thing is very important for people with beginning Alzheimer

This is heartbreaking. :(( His alcoholism certainly may have contributed to him developing this at such a young age. At least he will be supported by the club and of course fans will never forget him.

I had a friend years ago whose dad had Alzheimer's. Just the few brief things she said about her dad - before they were forced to institutionalize him - were awful.
It always warms my heart when clubs support football players with problems. Gazza once mentioned that when he became an alcoholic, Grandpère personally asked Arsenal to help him out with the rehab costs (around £40,000) and Spurs (his actual club) treated him like shit.
I think Arsenal have helped out some other players as well.
