While I was enjoying the Brahms Requiem, Real's title chances died a slow death.
I don't really mind that Bayern lost 4 in a row. But 2 of those 4 were key matches; Pokal semifinal, Cl semifinal. The injuries are too blame too of course but it's kinda painful.

Leicester might as well do the great escape now. Impressive.
The form of Tottenham this season is just incredibly weird.

Bad news here in Belgium; a fourth division player, Tim Nicot suffered a cardiac arrest on the field during a match between friends. Another player and a nurse started CPR before the doctors were there, he is still fighting for his life.

Wow, in the peak of fitness and getting heart attacks! It's enough to stuff my face with doughnuts!

Well the mechanism of the heart attack in a young sportsman is different from the heart attack in an older, obese, smoker. In those cases heart attacks are the result of deformities, mostly in vessels by age, cholesterol, tabacco smoke, .... With young people it's mostly through an abnormal reformation of the heart muscle.

Athletes actually have a higher risk of getting a heart attack at a young age than not-athletes. The more intense you play at the higher, the greater your risk. Strangely enough football players have the highest risk. 1 in 3 athletes who suffer a cardiac arrest are footballers.

Strangely enough football players have the highest risk

is this really statistically confirmed, or is it because football is the most popular sport in europe & thus this sort of thing is more likely to get reported by the media? (not to mention increased public awareness)

anyway, it's just a thought. it's true that footballers' lead a very intense sports life, between several 90 mins (or more) matches per week + week-long training that includes both intense gym sessions & on-pitch practice... so it's not surprising they're at a high risk for hypertrophic cardiomiopathy.

is there some sort of annual mandatory cardiac screening for professional footballers nowadays?

That's a very good question, I couldn't find the source of that graph so I did a little search. I think it's because football is the most popular sport because in Brazil it seems to be football too but in the NCAA, it's basketball that features more SCD.
Anyway, I think the nature of spending 90 minutes doing sprints, instead of a continuous exercise might not be ideal either. Plus commotio cordis might lead to some cases too.

I think professional clubs do a screening anyway. Gregory Mertens who passed away last week, underwent several screenings and they didn't find it.

A young man I went to school with had heart trouble that they discovered during military service (in our year, that was still compulsory for men if they didn't choose civilian service indeed). He was very fit too, played basketball and all that, but during some running exercises or whatever they did in the military, he got into big trouble. Luckily they realised he had trouble before he had a complete collapse, and he got surgery and as far as I know is fine now.

Brahms reqiuem? Nice! And probably more enjoyable than the Bayern and Real matches.

Oh, that's terrible about that player. And it happens again and again everywhere.

It was great. It was in a cathedral too. I love the Brahms Requiem and it's always better when you hear it live.

Yeah the hospital where I worked lost a young doctor to a sudden cardiac death just last week, I don't think we can prevent everything unfortunately.
