atletico madrid is a different club, to be fair jazzypom March 9 2015, 13:09:30 UTC
In that short of Fernando Torres (who pretty much left Atletico Madrid two years later than he should have - but he did it for the club to get some money) they don't really have stars. They have good, nay, exceptional players, but no one with the star power of Ronaldo or Bale or whatever, which works for the club in that they are seen as a unit ala Sparta. In addition, Simeone is given free reign to govern as he pleases. If a player isn't performing to standard, you're not going to get the President or the rest of the socios calling you on the carpet to explain yourself.

Ancelotti has to play his stars, because Real Madrid wants to see their stars play. There seems to be more politics against Ancelotti than anything. I'm sure he'd want to bench a few players, but he can't really do that.

Yeah, same! I know that he left LFC under a cloud and flopped at Chelsea and AC Milan, but I'm glad that Simeone brought him back to life. I'm glad that Simeone isn't expecting 2007 Torres, but working with the Torres that he has now. He seems more aggressive, knows how to press and work. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he and Simeone talk though. How does it feel to serve under the guy who you used to be his captain years back?

But Torres, to be fair to him, seems pretty chill, like he wouldn't throw a strop or hold on to the whole 'do you know who I am?' bit. His loyalty seems to be rewarded with Simone's trust.

See of course, I know all this. I just can't help whinging about it haha. I know what RM is like...(I just sometimes wish Ancelotti could say "screw you I'm the manager and I'm going to do what I think is best".

But I mean, could you imagine how that would go down with Ronaldo and the like?!

Exactly, Simeone is so realistic and he just wants everyone to perform at their 100%, that's how they earn their spot in the team. Also, he's so passionate... the players aren't just playing for themselves and the team but for him as well. It must be so motivating.

(I agree 100% about how chill he is, he seems so down to earth and just a great guy all-round.)

Yes, I wish we could both be flies on the wall. I wonder if Simeone shouts or does the whole disappointed thing or what he actually tells Torres...

I can't see Ancelotti throwing his weight around like that. Mourinho tried that by benching Casillas and eventually got ran out a rail, so... *whistles* But yeah, Ronaldo should have sat down after that whole brushing off his badge stunt- ugh.

iirc, I think he and Torres have been friends (well, they have a relatively warm relationship, I've read) since they played together back in 2005, and Torres always asked after Atletico, so I think he's always looking to bust a lung for the team. But I'm sure they speak mano y mano. Torres is 30, and has served under Rafa (oy), Ancelotti, Mourinho et al, I'm sure he knows how to take the direction from the coach, you know?

Really? I didn't know they were friends...

It's also kind of strange that Torres was captain when Simeone and he were playing together, and now Simeone is his manager, but yeah, of course. Torres is a professional, no doubt about that. :)

Friendly enough, from what I gathered. Simeone supposedly gave him advice on how to play his game, when Torres was younger and it's said that even though Torres was captain (and Simeone respected the band) Simeone was a leader on that that team when they were playing together as well. Torres took his advice on board.

There was a bit of admiration for Simone in this article I'm trying to find the ESPN article that discussed their relationship in depth, but ESPN has a way of moving articles and leaving dead links (tossers).

In a nutshell they got on at Atletico together and when Simeone said yes to managing Atletico it seems that Torres was one of the first to send congratulations and whatnot. Torres always asked after the club's fortunes, that sort of thing when he spent time away.

When Atletico Madrid demanded to know why Simeone wanted Torres, Simone said it was because they worked well together, and it seems that he offered an extra year to Atletico (since he was rumoured to be doing a sabatical ala Guardiola) if they gave him Torres. So yeah. There seems to be mutual respect there.

Omg thank you! I feel like I've learned so much from this convo haha.

That's actually really cool on Simeone's part. I loved him already but to hear praise from Fernando makes him love him even more.

The article was great <33
