For those who don't know, Copa America is a CONMEBOL-based international football tournament held every four years. In 2011, we saw Uruguay win the tournament in Argentina. In 2015, will they be able to defend their title in Chile?
Although it is organized by CONMEBOL, they invite other national teams to participate in the tournament. This year, the guests are CONCACAF's Mexico and Jamaica. The winner of the tournament will earn the right to represent South America at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. (If Mexico and Jamaica are in the finals, then the highest-ranking CONMEBOL nation will go through.)
The draw for the group stage was held just a few hours ago and here are the participating groups:
Group A: Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia
Group B: Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Jamaica
Group C: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela
The two best teams of each group and the two best third-place teams will advance to the knockout stage.
Chile will kick things off on June 11, 2015 against Ecuador. Stars expected to compete at this tournament include Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., Alexis Sanchez, and James Rodriguez. Due to his nine-match ban, we will not see Luis Suarez play for Uruguay.
