Interview with Philipp Lahm
Published in “Süddeutsche Magazine” of Oct. 30.- only printed version available.
I’m not going to translate the whole interview, only the important parts … or the funny ones. *gg*
When he talks about the National Team he always uses “we”, which he explains with being part of the same nation.
Asked about how he spends his time in hotels
Books are important. I read two novels by Harry Kaemmerer, they are set in Munich, one even deals with football. I now ordered three more of his books. At the bar in the evenings we play Poker or “Schafkopf” (which is a typical Bavarian card game).
They were always talking about Schafkopf in the NT. It’s stuff for legends.
Are you good at Schafkopf?
Extraordinary
Does Thomas Mueller think the same thing?
I think so, yes. But he isn’t bad either.
Then he talks about the fact that the name “Lahm” isn’t on his door bell and that he has to change his phone number all the time because it gets leaked and then mostly kids call his house.
The reporter asks him if he is a women’s kind of guy.
A women’s man? Me? Who says that?
At least three women in our team.
At the corso 2010 all the people were calling for Dutt (Bayern’s goalie), the middle aged women were hot for Thomas (Müller). Me? Kids were calling my name, saying, ‘hey, great, there is Philipp.’
Do you think you’re a sensitive captain?
I think so, yes. But I’m not sure if I can always feel the problems of my team.
Do you greet Michael Ballack when you meet him?
Of course. I was at his last match, too. We are completely relaxed with each other, believe it or not.
At the WC 2010 Ballack’s manager called the team a group of fags. How did you react to this as a captain?
Why should I? I wasn’t feeling as if it referred to me. Others have to react to that. The president or others.
How do you live with the rumour you caused Ballack to get sacked in the NT?
I wasn’t the one who injured him pre-WC, I wasn’t the one who nominates players. I know that, and everyone important knows it too.
What did Kahn do when you joined the NT? Did he take you to the side and explained to you how things worked?
It doesn’t work that way. You just watch and learn. One sits and the dinner table and thinks - do we really always have to wear the same thing?
He then says that he and Löw exchanged thoughts about the starting-line up and things. How he was afraid he wouldn’t get fit fast enough before the WC because his injury was more complicated then first thought. that even after the first two training sessions in Brazil he thought he wouldn’t be able to play.
That he never liked Yoga (OMG! I’m trying to imagine him doing that!!!)
And that he wants to find a job in football, because he loves it so much.
And then this!
Your mother says you were a very shy kid, that you always played a tree or the sun or the moon; only later you learned to speak on stage.
But I rocked the tree, moon and sun!
AND THEN THIS!!!
Who has your jersey from the final?
I kept it. Nobody wanted to exchange theirs with me.
CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS????? WAAAAH! I would have taken it!!! I wonder if I can still have it? WAAAAH.
