Rangers' defender Weir may face inquiry after displaying Royal tribute on shirt

David Weir could be at the centre of a bizarre SFA probe after wearing a Rangers jersey that paid tribute to the Royal Wedding couple. The Ibrox captain took to the field at Fir Park on Saturday sporting a shirt embroidered on the front with the words: 'Congratulations William & Catherine 29th April 2011'. Wearing a strip carrying a message goes against FIFA regulations as Law 4 relating to Players' Equipment states: 'The basic compulsory equipment must not contain any religious, political or personal statements.'

Former Motherwell secretary Alan Dick was the Scottish Premier League’s match delegate and spoke to Weir about the issue after the game. The incident will be mentioned in his report to the governing body. It is understood that Weir did not plan to make the gesture and learned of the work done to his jersey on Saturday morning. It would be unlikely, in that event, for Rangers to have received official clearance for the player to make a statement.
The 40-year-old defender did not consider it to be a controversial issue to wear the shirt. When asked after the match about the message, Rangers boss Walter Smith suggested the trail of inquiry would lead to the door of kitman Jimmy Bell. Smith said: 'Sorry, I can’t enlighten you at all. I didn’t know anything about it until today. It must have been the kitman.'
