American Exports: Rounding up the summer transfers
Kljestan, Beasley, White are winners; Adu, Feilhaber not so much
AMSTERDAM - With the sound of shutting transfer windows across Europe in midweek, it's time to examine the moves made and not made by key Americans across the pond.
Some found happy new homes, but most of the name ex-pats overseas stayed put, either due to choice or a tighter European market largely focused on bargains and youth promotion.
The Movers
DaMarcus Beasley-The winger literally had interest all over the European map throughout summer, but eventually chose to join buddy Steve Cherundolo at Hannover 96. His playing time potential and fit for the league style make this a decent move. And the way the Reds have played out of the gate, it may end up looking even smarter than that.
Carlos Bocanegra-Leaving Rennes was simply in the cards; his former employers also shed Asamoah Gyan and Petter Hansson during the window. Leaping to Saint-Étienne probably means some measure of relegation fighting. My real disappointment is that he's again being played at left back.
Sacha Kljestan-The former Chivas USA man takes the prize for best move of the window among Americans. No sprout, he should blossom in Brussels.
Frank Simek-Sometimes, the path back up starts by going down. Carlisle are out of the blocks smoothly in League One and the right back is featuring prominently.
Jeremiah White-The wide attacker is taking one last shot on the continent and landing with Polish side Bełchatów could see him into European cup play for the first time. This looks like an underrated move.
The Stayers
Freddy Adu-It has not been an ideal summer, but if he ends up playing for Aris this season, it can be forgotten. Whether he will be involved or not remains to be seen.
Jozy Altidore-Despite a crowd of interest from domestic powers across Europe, both the club and the player decided it best Jozy stay on the Yellow Submarine. As much fun and influential as it would have been to see him suit up for an Ajax or Fenerbahçe, I agree with them. He won't play as much as he did with Hull last season, but some time with Villarreal should be just as helpful to his learning curve.
Steve Cherundolo-The veteran had some pretty impressive suitors, but spurned them all to remain with the Reds. You've gotta respect that. He's been rewarded for his loyalty by Hannover's fine start.
Landon Donovan-I have often made my stance clear that the LA Galaxy star deserves a chance to play in the Premier League while he's in full flight. That being said, I rather disagree with those who claim the reported price tag shown Everton was unfairly excessive. If James Milner is worth $40 million, then nobody can fuss for MLS rating Donovan as worth a reported $15 million.

Benny Feilhaber-Perhaps the biggest surprise of the window is that this playmaker still wearing AGF white. The Danes had a price and none of his German and Spanish suitors would name it. He may still leave in winter, but for now, Aarhus will count on him to help keep the team in a bounce-back promotion place.
Clarence Goodson-Like Feilhaber, it was surprising that no one (apart from Bundesliga risers Kaiserslautern, who were rejected by the player) would cough up the proper fee for the defender. It couldn't have been that much, but the reality is teams are tightening their wallets and he will be available for free in four months. It'd have been nice to see him in the Europa League group stage with Gent or Odense, but his stock is still rising at IK Start.
Oguchi Onyewu-Steadfastly refusing loan assignments to fight for his place at AC Milan, Gooch is a brave man. The deck is stacked against him by new manager Massimiliano Allegri and it is now up to him to carve out a place in the selection. The age and fragility of competitors like Alessandro Nesta and Mario Yepes should offer some assistance.
The Last One
Jay DeMerit-The former Watford captain has yet to pick his new club. The gutsy center back seems to be holding out for a slightly better landing spot than offered by the handful of summer suitors. The wisdom of this gambit is still to be determined.
