Capello player rating website plan postponed

The 'Capello Index' would have provided performance data on all players within two hours of games ending in the tournament in South Africa.

But the project, announced on Monday, was criticised by the media.

After a meeting with the Football Association, a spokesman for the Italian said he has postponed the website until after the World Cup.

"Fabio Capello's involvement has been purely as a technical expert to establish statistical criteria for the Index," a spokesmen for Capello outlined.

"He has not been directly involved in the on-line gaming element of the site.

"However, he wants to ensure that all appropriate protocols are in place before the project proceeds and has therefore decided today to postpone it."

"It's not only about money, my interest is in football," said Capello.

In the Capello Index, players' performances would be marked out of 100 - based on computer analysis devised by the former Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid boss over the last two years.

Capello said the index would be "good for the fans".

Points would be dished out depending on the area of the pitch players competed in and the importance of the match.

A four-week trial of the index - limited to players from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur - rated Ledley King, Michael Dawson and Sol Campbell as the best English central defenders ahead of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand..

The website was also set to rate players' performances in the Premier League next season but it is not yet clear whether the project will go ahead then as planned.
