Hello, lovely ontd_football members!
STOP RIGHT HERE.

And I need your help too.
Explanation under the cut.
I posted about this a couple of months ago, but a little explanation is never out of place. San Lorenzo is a club based in the neighbourhood of Boedo, in Buenos Aires. The old Estadio Gasómetro, located in Avenida La Plata, was a venue of great renown, where many international games were held; it was known as the argentine Wembley and it held more than 75,000 people. It was more than just the home of the football team: it was a social institution, the heart of the club, the neighbourhood and the fans.  Unfortunately, poor administrations led San Lorenzo to a huge economic crisis during the 70’s. In 1979, during the military government, the mayor of Buenos Aires, Osvaldo Cacciatore, passed a law that implemented an urban renewal: they claimed that they needed to build new streets through the grounds where the stadium stood and that they’d build new houses in its place. The law also said, explicitly, that the construction of a supermarket was prohibited. San Lorenzo caved in to the debts and the pressure of the government. The Old Gasómetro was sold in 1979, for a mere 900,000 dollars, after a last match against Boca. Houses were never built in the grounds of Avenida La Plata; four years later, the law that prohibited the construction of a supermarket was annulled. The site was sold to the chain of French supermarkets, Carrefour, for 8 million dollars. Meanwhile, San Lorenzo didn’t have a home stadium for fourteen years. Finally, the Stadium Pedro Bidegain (aka, the Nuevo Gasómetro) was inaugurated in 1993, in el Bajo Flores. While fans are proud to have a home again, the site doesn’t mean anything to the identity of the azulgrana fans. The supporters want to go back to Tierra Santa, to Boedo, to their neighbourhood. This is why San Lorenzo fans are raising money to buy the properties that surround Carrefour, hoping to ultimately buy the supermarket and rebuild the stadium where it belongs. Viggo Mortensen donated 80,000 dollars for this a while back. Sadly, the club has done almost nothing to go back to Boedo. The fans are in this fight alone, and it is clearly hard for us to raise that much money on our own.
