Hindus and Muslims Most Likely to Abstain from Premarital Sex

Oct 29, 2012 11:26

I can't put my finger on it, but as a Hindu lady, I'm not liking this article very much. Plus, India has an extremely high HIV rate, even if the Middle East doesn't, so obviously there is extramarital sex going on. And twenty-somethings in Mumbai and Bangalore absolutely go out and hook up. Social mores aren't really terribly different from the ( Read more... )

Since this seems to rely on self reporting I don't know if this reflects actual numbers, or the numbers of people who are willing to report having sex outside of marriage. If find the reported rate of extramarital sex for Christians doesn't match up with my personal knowledge, and I don't think that it is just that I associate with a particularly perverse set of Christians.

And I knew I shouldn't look at the comments, but I still did.

It definitely doesn't reflect actual numbers, because the truck drivers of India DEFINITELY visit prostitutes all the time, which is a big contributor to the high HIV rate. And again, twenty somethings in the big cities are dating and doing all the things twenty somethings in the Western world do.

But ugh, the comments about Hindus and Muslims :|

Ugh. No. Just no. I'm not impressed by the fact that it's a study by a religious university, either, but "the burqa works", really? I don't have any statistics on hand, but I'm under the impression that even with a burqa muslim men still rape and commit adultery. It's more veiled, pardon the pun, and if the women report it the blame falls on /women/, but happens, and a lot.

That and Hindu numbers were /lower/ than Muslim numbers, even though Hindu women /don't/ normally cover their heads. So forget causation, the correlation isn't even present here.

I wish there would be some scrutiny over this "study".

I noticed that, too :/ It doesn't make any sense.

Why aren't this things submitted to peer-reviews before being published? What's happening to science?

No one pretended there was anything scientific about this. I actually came across it in Jezebel and it made me roll my eyes really hard. Jezebel in turn linked to Huffington Post, and I'm getting rather disenchanted with that source too.

Yeah because self-reporting on topics like this is REALLY going to inspire honesty in people.

As a study of how comfortable people feel with the idea of premarital sex, it might tell us something. But for an accurate indication of their behaviour? Don't think so.

This study is such bullshit I have friends that went to Muslim private schools, and there are just as many women in head scarfs who are experimenting as girls who don't wear it. I don;t think I know any Hindu women though..

Speaking! I'm Hindu American though, born and raised in the States, not India, and I was 19 when I slept with a guy for the first time. Unmarried, not even dating him, he was...not boyfriend material. But holy shit he was hot. I suppose I am a late bloomer...
