TW for rape, suicide, abuse

Love & Loathing & Lulu & Ayano is a movie that will be premiering in NYC in July at the NYAFF.
Based on a book comprised of interviews of adult film actresses, it paints a rather bleak picture of the adult film world. It's not about the popular actresses who make a lot of money in the industry, but the "kikaku (event) actresses", often women who are of "lower quality" -- first-timers, women who are past their prime (being over 25), women with some sort of physical "flaw" -- who star in themed, often degrading porn in groups. There are an estimated 10,000-30,000 women who work in the industry in Japan, and the majority of them are kikaku actresses.

The industry often is, as the source says, a place where girls and women who "stick out" in some way from society get to so they could make a living, but it doesn't exist to heal their psychological wounds or to help them get back into society and find their way. They instead exploit them and a disturbing number of actresses and former actresses end up becoming addicted to drugs, falling into depression, and sometimes committing suicide.

I think it's such an important movie, because Japan is as porn-obsessed as the US, and there are rarely any opportunities for consumers of porn to actually stop and think of the actresses as being human beings, and of the issues in the porn industry in general. If you are in NY, I'd urge you to watch it.

Btw the direct translation of the title is "Women without names"; I have no idea why they decided to rename it :x
