I'm sort of chuffed that Jean Charcot is mentioned here. Great and pioneering neurologist, though obviously not perfect.

On a more pertinent note, my neurologist relatives claim that there IS such a medical condition as 'hysteria' - only not the way it's traditionally understood, and it affects men and women equally.
