For real. I really hate when people argue for gay rights/marriage because homosexuality is genetic, it's always seems like a way of saying ~they just can't help the way they are, those poor things~.
I've always found the argument that sexuality is determined at birth therefore homosexual and pansexual people deserve equal rights unsettling, how about they should have equal rights because they are human?
I think that's what people are trying to say though. Like, "look - just like you're socialized born straight, these people are born LGBTQIA. They're human. Marriage is a right, not a privilege, so stop denying it to them." sort of deal.
to me a lot of times when this argument is made they seem to be saying "well it wouldn't be fair to deny them rights cause it's not their CHOICE that they are like this. there's nothing they can do about it. it's not their fault." which implies that there is something deviant about their sexuality that would make it a bad choice if there were a choice
Not to mention there are lots of identity choices people make that are protected. Religion being a major one. It would be condescending to insist that people of certain religious faiths deserve rights just because they can't help being religious/were born into their religions. They deserve rights because they're people.
