Why don't we talk about all the misogyny in rock music too.

I'm looking at you Nickleback :|

That's what kills me, no one ever talks about the misogyny in older rock music or current. Laughed so hard when my SO's family was talking about why they hate rap and how it's so sexualized and stuff and stuff, and I was like, "You know the whole reason rock came about was because it was so sexualized and stuff and stuff." They didn't have anything to say to that.

That's because rock is seen as mainstream and white now - it's 'safe'. Back when it first started, the fact it borrowed from lots of black music and some of the earlier artists that Elvis 'borrowed' his schtick from were black made it a lot more controversial.

Also, anything middle class white aging baby boomers like is automatically culture worthy of respect that should not be insulted by looking at too critically.

Oh, I know it. It's ridiculous. I had to set her straight, she loves rock and metal and punk, but pop and hip hop are too sexualized for her? Especially when she's watching shit like that Slipknot video that has the band and hot chicks in bikini having pillowfights around them? It's still the same shit, still the same messages, and even when it's not, the messages about women and their roles are VERY problematic.

And also, historically, sex in music is nothing new. My dad used to talk to me about the raunchy stuff they played back then all the time (they certainly got radio play on tiny country stations back then, I guess).

-Guy spends the night in a separate room
-The girl is gone when he wakes up
-Guy burns her motherfucking place down because she didn't put out what what what is this i don't even
