I'm sure the news froms this morning has got a lot of Korea fans down, but let's focus on happier things, like Korea's Olympic women's team. Anyways, last week I posted the intro for the Korean men's team, and I said I would follow it up with the women's team. There's even less information about them, but I did the best I could.
So, without any further ado:
WOMEN'S TEAM
Left to right: Park Seung-Hi, Kim Min-Jung, Lee Eun-Byul (in the front row), Cho Hae-Ri, Choi Jung-Won
(Also bonus Americans and Canadians. Sorry, this was pretty much the only picture I could find of all of them.)
LEE EUN-BYUL (이은별)
DOB: October 2, 1991 (18)
Birthplace: Incheon, South Korea
Started Skating: unknown (but it seems she was pretty young)
Fun Fact: her name roughly translates into "Silver Star"
Studying: she just graduated from high school and plans to attend Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.
The 2009-2010 season is the first time she has participated in senior level international competitions, and she made her Olympic debut this year as well. She's also very teeny tiny (5'0"), but considers her size to be beneficial as it allows her to maneuver better than bigger skaters.
In her spare time, she enjoys surfing the internet, chatting with friends and using the South Korean social network Cyworld.
World Championships
2010 Sofia
Gold in 3000m relay, silver in 1500m and bronze in 3000m.
Olympic Games
Vancouver 2010
Silver in 1500m.
PARK SEUNG-HI (박승희)
DOB: March 28, 1992 (18)
Birthplace: Seoul, South Korea.
Started Skating: unknown
Fun Fact: I've got nothing
Studying: unknown (she probably hasn't graduated from high school yet)
I can't really find anything on her, which isn't suprising considering how young she is. But she's obviously a talented skater!
World Championships
2010 Sofia
Gold in 1500m, 3000m and 3000m relay, placed first overall.
2008 Gangneung
Gold in 3000m relay.
Olympic Games
Vancouver 2010
Bronze in 1000m and 1500m.
KIM MIN-JUNG (김민정)
DOB: March 20, 1985 (25)
Birthplace: Seoul, South Korea.
Started Skating: unknown
Fun Fact: unknown
Studying: unknown/possibly N/A
That isn't really anything on her, either. But I guess she competes in mostly relays?
World Championships
2010 Sofia
Gold in 3000m relay.
2009 Vienna
Gold in 1500m, silver in 1000m and 3000m relay, placed second overall.
2008 Gangneung
Gold in 3000m relay.
2007 Milan
Gold in 3000m relay.
Olympic Games
Vancouver 2010
(Competed only the 3000m relay, and did not medal. Korea finished first in the relay but were disqualified.)
CHO HAE-RI (조해리)
(Hae-Ri on the right!)
DOB: July 29, 1986 (23)
Birthplace: Seoul, South Korea.
Started Skating: age 8
Fun Fact: apparently, though her name is spelled "Ha-Ri" almost everywhere, that is actually incorrect
Studying: plans to study Physical Education/Physiology at Korea University in Seoul
Hae-Ri originally started skating as a hobby, never intending to compete. She also says she used to like wearing her skin suit everywhere when she was young, including to the grocery store. Previously, she attended Korea University for two years before leaving school in order to focus on her skating, and she plans to return to school after the 2010 Olympics.
She enjoys playing the piano, cross-stitching and listening to music. Just like our other favourite Cho, she has been referred to as the "ace" of the team by her teammate Eun-Byul.
World Championships
2010 Sofia
Gold in 3000m relay, silver in 1000m and 3000m, bronze in 1500m, placed third overall.
2003 Warsaw
Bronze in 3000m.
Olympic Games
Vancouver 2010
(Competed in four events, but did not medal. She did however come in 4th in the 1000m and 5th in the 1500m.)
CHOI JUNG-WON (최정원)
Can't find a decent picture of her. All I've got is the one from the Vancouver 2010 site:
DOB: March 16, 1990 (20)
Birthplace: Seoul, South Korea.
Started Skating: unknown
Fun Fact: unknown
Studying: unknown
Once again, there is literally nothing but the very basics on Jung-Won.
World Championships
2010 Sofia
Gold in 3000m relay.
Olympic Games
Vancouver 2010
(Competed in the 3000m relay, but did not medal.)
Sources are once again the Vancouver 2010 site, NBC Olympic site and Wikipedia.
