Epically Large Fencing post

May 02, 2010 15:52

You all well know by now that I'm a fencer, and I LOOOOVE the sport.  I thought I'd take time to introduce you guys to the athletes and a bit about the sport.

First of all there are three weapons:

Foil is probably the most difficult weapon.  It's very light (less than 1 lb), and you can only score a point by touching your opponents torso.  There are also rules about "right-of-way," which mean that, should two opponents touch each other at the same time, the one who attacked first gets the point.  That's a gross over-simplification, but foil is not my strong suit.

More about foil.

Sabre (or Saber) is a very popular weapon, and also a lot of fun to watch.  Unlike foil and epee, where you can only score points by touching your opponent with the tip of your weapon, a sabrist can score points by hitting with any part of the blade.  Bouts look a lot like a swordfight.

More about sabre.

Epee (what I fence) is the most methodical of the three.  Points can only be scored by touching the tip of the blade with a certain level of pressure.  Also, unlike sabre and foil, a touch anywhere on the body, including legs.  Epeeists tend to be taller (although I'm pretty short), and epee bouts tend to move slower than others.  Because epee is so mental, many fencers start out with it.

More about epee.

How fencing works:

Fencers fight in what's known as a bout.  Usually, competitions start out with 5-minute preliminary "pool" bouts, where fencers are split off into groups and each person in the group must fence every other person.  These bouts go for 5 minutes, or until one fencer has earned 5 points.

After the pools, players are seeded based on how many points they score minus how many points are scored on them.  They are then put into a bracket where it's determined who will fence whom and when.  Fencers fight based on these brackets for 15 minute bouts, or until one opponent scores 15 points.

Players are eliminated after losing a bout, and eventually there is one winner.

More on how it works.

And now, the fencers:
