Ellery Hollingsworth has stepped onto the professional snowboarding scene with no plans of going away anytime soon. Having just reached 18 years old, this tenacious and talented young lady from Connecticut was awarded the 2006 “Rookie of the Year” award by judges and event organizers of the 24th Annual US Open of Snowboarding Championships in Stratton, Vermont, for being the only female to earn final berths in the Quarterpipe, Superpipe, and Slopestyle events. First taught to snowboard by her two older brothers, Ellery now combines determination, natural athleticism, and a great sense of humor to make each day on the mountain productive, progressive, and fun. With her sights set on podium finishes and aspirations of competing in the 2010 Olympics, Ellery is a star on the brink of shining very brightly. When Ellery is not snowboarding you can find her jibbing handrails, playing with her dogs, or skateboarding
- What fears do you have? How do you deal with them? I I'm scared of freefalling, so I'm kind of avoiding skydiving.
- What interests do you have other than snowboarding? I'm really good at sleeping, I also enjoy skateboarding, and I've started to surf, which is awesome.
- What makes you different than other girls or just unique? There aren't many girls that do slope, pipe, and QP. I do them all and it's so fun. Hopefully more women start to compete in all, it's a good time.
- Who is the most influential person in your life and why? My Mom is the most influential person in my life because she has always been there for me and she is just amazing person, and I really look up to her.
- What are the 3 biggest things you learned from your parents? 1. Be polite 2. Happy 3. Everything happens for a reason
- Tell me a little about your best friend. Why are they your best friend and how are you alike and different from each other? I met my best friend, Camilla when we were two, she moved into the house next door, and we have been best friends ever since. We balance each other out because I'm crazy outgoing, and she's laid back. We know each other so well that we don't really fight either.
- What are your most fond childhood memories? One of my best memories would be when I was on a family vacation to So cal. I was ten years old and one day my brothers and I snuck into a skatepark that was closed. The cops came while we were skating and it was bad news. Jeb, my oldest brothers jumped the fence and ran home, but Kyle waited for me because I wasn't big enough to get over the fence. The cops drove us to our hotel and spoke to my dad. All of my cousins and aunts and Uncles were there, it wasn't funny at the time but now we laugh.
- What do you hold the most valuable to you in life? My family, no question. Without my parents letting me do what I do, and my brothers are always there for me. The unconditional support is key, I owe them for sure.
- What are the things or stories that encapsulate the way you live your life? Growing up with two older brothers surrounded by sports I was always trying to keep up with them, tagging along. I think I'm tougher now because let's just say they weren't gentle. I still always go to them for advice, and they'll tell me straight up instead of trying not to hurt my feelings.
- What is the greatest thing you have taught somebody else? Hopefully I've taught other people to be nice, because everyone loves a nice person. Right??
- What are the things that inspire you? Everything inspires me, especially things that are unique and you wouldn't normally see. Skateboarding, music, my brothers and other people who are happy and friendly are very influencial. Tretchery, the club consisting of Trisha, Gretchen and Ellery. Those girls inspire me despite my initiation in New Zealand.
- How do you see yourself? When I first meet someone I might come off a bit quiet, but after I spend some time with a person I'm really outgoing and I love neck-warmers.
- What event had the biggest impact on your life in the past year?
I’m not sure I can answer this question with a snowboard event. Recently the sports agency I work with and I went to Orlando for two days and spent time with these children with a disease called Progeria. It was some pretty heavy stuff, but it was the most eye opening and inspirational event of my life. It was such an honor to spend time with those children.
