Sherlock Holmes Writer Hired For Downey Jr. Heist Film
Back in June Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey, created a production company called Team Downey and decided that their first project would be a heist film called Yucatan that was originally meant to star Steve McQueen. There was a hitch, however: there was no script. Rather, the whole film exists as 1,700 pages of notes and storyboards found in a trunk belonging to McQueen following his death. So, naturally, the next step is to find someone to put it all together.
Deadline reports that screenwriter Anthony Peckham, best known for writing the RDJ-vehicle Sherlock Holmes and Clint Eastwood's Invictus, has been giving the daunting task of turning Yucatan into a script. In addition to producing, Downey Jr. will also star in film, where he will play a "renegade deep-sea salvage expert" who is enlisted to steal a treasure under the Mayan ruins of Yucatan. Warner Bros. has been trying to get the film made for the better half of the last decade, but had all but given up before Team Downey came on-board.
While I've always seen Daniel Craig as the modern-day equivalent of Steve McQueen, anyone who says that Downey Jr. wasn't born to play a renegade deep-sea salvage expert is smoking crack.
