'Avengers' Heroes All Have 'Big Egos,' Chris Hemsworth Says

The 'Thor' actor jokes that his co-stars, playing Marvel superheroes from Iron Man to Captain America, are split about just who'll lead.
After debuting to a raucous crowd at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, the key players comprising "The Avengers" gang are now set. What's not yet clear is which of the superheroes in this Marvel all-star team will assume the leadership role. According to comic book lore, Captain America is the guy who unites many of the heroes - including Thor and Iron Man - but the man who will hold Thor's hammer on the big screen next year is not so sure the Captain is assured the boss role.

"Big egos," Chris Hemsworth laughed to MTV News shortly before the announcement of the "Avengers" cast at Con, adding that Thor does not like to be ordered around. "I don't think he likes to be. I don't think any of them do. That's what's so interesting."

That sentiment jibes with what both Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. had to say about the "Avengers" leadership role: It's up for grabs, at least according to the actors.

"Does he [run the show]?" Evans, who plays the Captain, speculated to MTV News in April about his character. "I don't think anybody tells Downey what to do, and that's what makes [him] Downey."

Indeed. "I'll clown all of them," Downey said of his Iron Man. "I'll just clown those fools."

So while the stars continue to trade good-natured smack talk, director Joss Whedon is gearing up to bring all these superheroes together in time for a May 2012 theatrical release. Hemsworth, who worked with the director on the upcoming "Cabin in the Woods," can't wait for Whedon to bring his "Avengers" vision to the big screen.
"I knew him from back then, and then had a chat [with] him about a month or two ago about 'The Avengers' and what he plans on doing, and it's incredibly impressive and exciting," the actor told us.
