After introductory remarks at the Due South fan convention last weekend in Toronto, organizer Stephane Racle made a rousing announcement.
“In about 40 minutes,” he said, “Paul Gross is going to be here.”
The hotel conference room erupted in high-pitched cheers and applause. Gross’s appearance was a glorious treat for the 65 attendees who came this past weekend from all over the world, including the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, to fete the now-defunct Canadian television drama.
Due South, which starred Gross as a Mountie fighting crime in Chicago, went off the air 12 years ago. But the release of the show on DVD in recent years has renewed its cult following and attracted new fans. Almost half of the convention attendees were first-time visitors to the gathering.
