CBC renews Republic of Doyle, cancels The Border

According to news reports, CBC has renewed The Republic of Doyle.

The one-hour St. John's, Newfoundland-based comedy-drama, starring Newfoundland native Allan Hawco and Sean McGinley as father-and-son detective team, debuted on January 6.

The Ron James Show, featuring Nova Scotian comedian Ron James, was previously announced on February 10 as being renewed. The CBC has also apparently picked up Men With Brooms, a sitcom based on the 2002 movie by Paul Gross, and Insecurity.

Unfortunately, the CBC is reportedly cancelling The Border after three seasons. The Toronto-set drama series debuted in 2008, starred James McGowan, Graham Abbey, and Vancouver's Grace Park, and followed the fictitious Immigration and Customs Security agency, which dealt with Canadian security issues.

The Toronto Sun reported that an official statement has not been released yet from the CBC regarding The Republic of Doyle or The Border, but added that sources confirmed the information.

A PR rep for The Republic of Doyle contacted by the Georgia Straight has confirmed that the series has been renewed for a second season.
