Idoloonies: Hoping for Surprises in a Haley-Free, Lauren Vs. Scotty Finale

May 24, 2011 10:43

It’ll be an all-country, teen-vs.-teen showdown when American Idol kicks off the first half of its two-night Season 10 finale in a few short hours. And somewhere backstage at the Nokia, I’m guessing Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe is rubbing his hands together with glee that it’s come down to a pair of fresh-scrubbed kids who’ve been prominently featured on the show since the audition rounds kicked off in January.

Still, there’s an air of predictability surrounding a coronation ceremony starring Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, two contestants who’ve stayed in their lanes and shied away from unexpected song choices and daring arrangements over the last twelve weeks of live performances.

Season 7 finalist Carly Smithson and I enter the Idoloonies arena this week and brainstorm ways to infuse Season 10′s swan song with a sense of the unexpected. We talk about one creative move we’d like to see from Scotty, ponder the fashion choices that might help Lauren have a tiny chance at an upset victory, and wax philosophical about the risk-taking awesomeness of recent evictee Haley Reinhart. All that, plus an update on Carly’s latest adventures, and some thoughts on what Scotty and Lauren can learn from this year’s third- and fourth-place finishers.
