'Idol' winner Kris Allen: single out in two weeks

“American Idol” winner Kris Allen is well into recording his debut album, but he’s not sure precisely how far.

Allen, speaking in an interview Tuesday before his performance with the American Idols Live tour at Reading’s Sovereign Center, said he’s been recording tracks during stops on the tour, which started July 5 - a month after he signed his contract with 19 recordings and Jive Records.

He said, for example, he was recording Tuesday in Philadelphia with Alex Band from The Calling.

“But I don’t know exactly how far we are,” he says, laughing.

He knows, however, that a single is being prepared for release right after the “Idols Live” tour concludes Tuesday, and definitely before the end of September. But he steadfastly refuses to release any details on it.

“I know what it is, but I can’t say anything,” he said.

His album, now scheduled out Nov. 17, will be “soft rock, with a little singer-songwriter thing in it, but not too much,” he says. “It’s difficult to explain, but it’s cool. You’ll just have to listen.”

Though songs on the disc “will have different feels, the thing that’s consistent to all of them is me,” he says. But he says there will be no surprises and he hasn’t done any type of music he hadn’t expected to. “Everything does have an organic feel to it, which is good.”

He says it’s “very possible” he’ll work with other members of the Top 10 on the tour, especially those whose music has the same feel as his. “But putting two different styles of music together can be an amazing thing,” he says.

Dressed in the same jeans and plaid shirt he would later wear on stage, the unassuming Allen says that for the first time on the tour, he is under the weather. He also laments that he’s been so busy that it’s been hard to even find time to maintain contact with his family and friends. “I’m so wrapped up with this,” he says.

But he says the experience has been a dream. He said his best memory was playing in his hometown of Little Rock, Ark. “It was in a sold-out arena that I’ve been in many times, but not as a performer, he says. He says the crowd cheered for five minutes straight, and he actually had to “calm them down” so he could sing.

In fact, he says, his underdog win over favorites Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey on the show’s Eighth Season was similarly a dream.

“I think everybody thought it was a surprise,” Allen says. “I was just happy to get as far as I had gotten. I was blessed that I won. It gave me the chance to make the album I wanted to make.”
