A conservative US state senator who has voted against gay rights measures during his 14 years in office has announced he is gay.
Republican Roy Ashburn came out during a radio interview in California, where he sits on the state legislature. He has been on leave since his arrest last week on suspicion of driving under the influence. Mr Ashburn said

(By "correlation" I mean the mathematical sense of the term: the percentage of virulent homophobes who are gay is greater than the percentage of people who are gay. You'd expect it to be much less.)
This of course doesn't support that stereotype, any more than the overrepresentation of Jews in physics suggests that all/most Jews are physicists. But it's at least interesting statistically.
I recall a study (described to me by my partner at the time, who is a neuropsychologist; I don't have a citation, but she studies this stuff) that surveyed self-described straight men about their attitudes toward homosexuality, and then showed them gay porn while attaching a miniature blood pressure cuff (called a "rigiometer", lulz) to their penises. Sure enough, there was a positive correlation between homophobic attitudes and penile erection when watching gay porn.
