Lelouch didn’t stop himself from chuckling quietly at the rather defensive retort. He could feel the tension between them mounting all over again though that didn’t seem to disappointment him as much as the fact that his subtle effort to express his similar situation to Dino had been a little...too subtle. Oh well. The consigliere would just have to be a little direct; something he was used to doing in his experience with Suzaku. That boy could be so thick sometimes...
Back to the topic at hand... “There’s no need to bring up such ugly words like treason. An opinion on the matter is all I was looking for. It is nice to meet someone who shares the same as mine, after all.”
Pausing there, Lelouch let that sink in as he slowly took a sip from the glass he’d practically forgotten about. Hopefully that would help ease some of that aforementioned tension.
Not waiting for an immediate answer, Lelouch continued as soon as he set his glass back down.
“Given that you hold no particular esteems for any faction, I’m curious to know what it is you might be aspiring for. Surely you don’t want to be stuck in such an unfavorable position for the rest of your life...”
Quietly Dino chose his words carefully, "Well...If I have to be on someones side then the Monacello and I want to be a Caporegime at some point." That was all he said. "But, since that is never going to happen with Byakuran on top...unless I accept Mukuro..then I'm going to stay a soldati."
"Of course ...I wonder how you got to your position. If you're as much like me as I think. My name was quite a curse you know? Cavallone seems to haunt me." Dino looked thoughtful, "Of course it depends...If there is no way to grab what I want then, I suppose I can make a different way to get the power..."
Now they were getting somewhere. That was the kind of confirmation Lelouch had been seeking- that willingness to think and go “outside the box”, so to speak, to get what one desired most. He hoped his pleasure at such a response was evident by the smirk on his face. Of course a higher position within the Monacello wasn’t exactly the extent of the aspirations he was looking forward to hearing about but... well even in his own agenda, rising through the family was only the first step.
“How ambitious. I admire that,” Lelouch admitted to the other softly, intentionally so to further imply the fondness he was growing for the soldati. As for Dino’s wondering, he decided it was probably high time for him to reward his subordinate with a little insight about himself.
“I came into my position through rather persuasive demonstrations of loyalty, mostly. With one family thinking I’d been killed and the other in desperate need of powerful alliances to secure the reign of their new leader, my original name hardly mattered, neither does it seem to anymore.” Not to the Monacello anyway. The Vescovo on the other hand...
