Walking into the park, Kairi noticed she managed to make it there before everyone left. She had gotten back from her friendly dinner date with Ulquiorra not too long before then, and she figured she had enough time to change her clothes before heading out to the park.
The redhead caught a glimpse of Jushirou and Shunsui and slowly made her way over, her hands clasped in front of her. She stopped a few feet away and smiled at them. "I told you I'd show up," she chimed cheerily.
Jushirou didn't move from his position leaning against Shunsui, but did turn his head to give a bright grin to Kairi, raising his glass in a wave to her. "Welcome, welcome!", he said to her. Seemed like the small gathering was coming together.
Kairi simply smiled in return before looking up at the sky. She watched the stars twinkle silently, and she realized that she couldn't remember ever looking at the stars. Glancing at them, maybe, but actually staring at the sky to see how beautiful they were was something new to her.
Making a quiet sound of disapproval as she thought of it, she realized that she probably couldn't even point out any constellations. Kairi really needed to actually look more often. At least the fireflies were a comforting presence. She could pretend that the stars were there beside her, moving around her.
... Did she really have that active of an imagination, or was her head in the clouds tonight?
Shunsui's voice brought her back down to earth, though. "Oh, thank you! I already ate, but I'll take a drink." Kairi smiled as she took a few steps closer to them and sat down, making sure she wasn't too close to or too far from them.
Jushirou chuckled slightly at how Kairi seemed to get lost in the wonder surrounding her. Oh to be that young again...a rather pleasant time of life really. Coming into the world of adulthood, ready to find one's place. He had just begun with the NPA himself at that age, leaving behind the life of solitude he had in that peaceful Ainu settlement...
Choosing a life with the man he leaned upon at that moment, actually.
"Something soft or hard, then? I have some chilled tea if you'd rather not partake in sake," Jushirou offered with a grin.
Kairi bent her knees and wrapped her arms around them. She still remembered her night out with Grimmjow the night before, and though sake probably wasn't like whatever the bartender had put in her tonic water when she asked for something that wasn't strong, she still didn't want to take the chance of having to kick someone for laughing at her while she was choking on her drink again. She'd gotten away with a headache that night, and that was Grimmjow being nice. Who knew what someone else that didn't even know her would do if she kicked them.
"I'll just have some tea," she replied with a soft laugh, looking back in front of her and resting her chin on her knees. It really was a beautiful sight and she was glad that she was able to come.
It was at this point the next of the employee's decided to show up. "Hey hey, don't give kids alcohol, you two know better." Ken chided, lugging a large back up to the spot.
"Ah? A kid? I was sure she was a radiant young woman. Well, none for you then, I guess" Shunsui replied to Ken, reaching over and taking the Sake bottle that was within a few feet of the man. He glanced up with smile.
Kairi couldn't help but shake her head at their conversation. It was obvious that different people had different opinions about her. She was either being complimented or being called 'kid', it never failed. But of course, it didn't bother her any.
"I'll be taking the tea anyway, thank you," she cut in as politely as she could. She caught sight of the cookies, but her stomach angrily reminded her that there was no way she could eat anymore, even if something sweet would be a nice contrast to the slight spicy taste that was still in her mouth.
Kairi smiled as she leaned back to lay down, keeping her legs bent. "It is a nice night, isn't it?"
Jushirou wordlessly nodded, happy to have the company he had tonight. He didn't get to cherish moments like these much anymore...the world seemed to move so fast in a city like this. These treasured times of peace and innocence...he cherished these. They were what made his work seem worthwhile...a decade of life spent protecting this city, even from itself...
"I think I'll take one of those, Ken," Jushirou commented after a few moments of thoughts. He had a bit of a sweet tooth, after all.
Ken grinned and held the plate out for him. "Try the layered ones, the frosting's really great." He said. "I've seen people pig out on entire bags of this stuff."
"Also, the strawberry ones are pretty good, those are the long ones there beside filled ones."
Okita looked up from his spot. He had stayed quiet as he silently gathered information from each person. "I don't think so, haven't set up the fireworks yet." The young Sargent said with a mouthful of dumpling.
No cookies for Shunsui, he pouted at Ken but resigned to the more savory things to nibble on.
"Not at all, Miss. Kiyone! You're right on time" He called out to her.
"How are the dumplings?" He asked Okita.
It felt like happy family gathering, and Shunsui was becoming quite glad he'd thought of it. He couldnt help but notice how Jushirou was glowing. ...Maybe it was just the moonlight on his white hair.
While Jushirou noticed the man and woman standing some distance off, he didn't make an effort to cal lthem over. They seemed like a couple and he didn't want to interrupt moments like that. But he could have sword that white haired man looked familiar...no sense in dwelling on it though.
Perhaps it was the moonlight, or perhaps it was the love of having all of his friends gathered in one place for such a night, but Jushirou was glowing. The man just couldn't stop smiling...
