That Gin had allowed Hei to drive was something of a miracle, Hei thought. They wouldn't have been able to announce their presence better than to have Gin behind the wheel of his car-of which, Hei reminded himself, the wheels needed to be checked and probably replaced. The young man didn't allow himself to be distracted by his commander's actions with the parasol and its concealed blade, knowing that Gin's point control with just about anything that could hold an edge was nearly surgical. His commander didn't really need for his young second to voice it aloud-both because they knew that Hei would agree with him and because it was actually true-but Hei made a soft murmur of agreement about Spanner's skills, keeping his eyes on the road ( ... )

Kristoph had gotten into his car that night with many thoughts in his head. He'd considered calling Mazikeen - as a matter of fact, he'd had her finger hovering over her speed dial - but had decided against it. First of all, the fact that she was not at his place at one thirty in the morning suggested she had found something (or someone) amusing to do; he thought idly of Kira. Plus, he realized, he'd get to see her pout at him in all of her frustration, and that was always a delightful sight to see ( ... )

Gin grinned as he watched Gavin descend from his vehicle. Pushing himself off lightly from where he leaned against the side of his car, he bowed deeply, his left arm as it always was, braced against Shinsou's hilt. "Gavin-han," he chimed, giving Hei a small motion to indicate that he should take Rhode's parasol from out of the car. "You are as punctual as always, naa?" As he spoke, he held a hand out and to the side, palm open to receive the umbrella that Hei eventually deposited there. With a smooth motion, he turned it and hooked it so that its handle hung around his wrist; its collapsed bell, with its edge of cream-colored ruffles, swung backwards and forwards lightly as he moved to close the space between himself and Gavin. "Hei has told you of the situation." He didn't need to look at his second-in-command to receive confirmation of this statement; Gin was always aware of what Hei was up to -- sometimes, even before Hei did. "Should be simple enough, naa ( ... )

Hei followed his commander's example and gave Gavin a bow-though it was not nearly as low as Gin for he would not show the man his neck no matter how much respect Gin had for him-but his eyes were just a little bit distant, just a little bit distracted. They focused again when Gin spoke to him, because Gin would always take precedence over his own thoughts, his own feelings, his own being ( ... )

Bitter air was the only contact she had gained with the sensations of her surroundings until the noise started, the dry taste of anesthesia permeating every breath she drew. Mouth, nose, throat- Too dry to be comfortable, even after the bit of ice water they'd given her. Lying on a table and waiting for the feeling to come back to her body, watching some invisible point on the ceiling with disoriented prayers that something new wouldn't be wrong when she did wake up completely. Just tests, they'd said. No changes ( ... )

How interesting Hei was. If Mazikeen had been here, she would have done the same, throwing herself in a line of fire. But it seemed as if the bullet hadn't correctly punctured him. There was no spray of blood, no wet noise of organ or vein being hit. It was a thought for another day, or even later tonight. He dropped his victim, slipping the wire from around his neck - the man fell with a thud, the livid bruising around his throat enough to show anyone the cause of death. Holding the garrote loosely in his hands, he smirked just a hint as Hei tore into a guard ( ... )

Gin caught the small flicker across his peripheral vision, but as he braced himself to release Shinsou, it was already too late. Hei moved quickly and surely to prevent the guard's bullet from finding its mark, the backwards momentum throwing him backwards and almost off his feet. Gin frowned in response, but only for a moment, for sure enough, there was Hei's knife cuttng through the man's scream. Now, Gin laughed, threw his hand back and laughed, his whole body hung from the bowed-back curve of his spine ( ... )

Hei watched the two men with Rhode for a moment before he moved to follow Gin's command, yanking his knife free of the dead man's neck before turning and advancing on the last of the three doctors. The man was cowering a corner, babbling incoherently about an experiment that couldn't go to waste, about only following orders, about not being killed. Whatever look was on Hei's face made the man pale and try to move further back into the corner, as tears started slipping down his face ( ... )
