She thought for a moment before walking off the beach and towards a little blue building nearby. "I briefly went to high school with the woman who runs this place. She left town for a while, worked as an army medic, but now she's back and happier than ever. It's been months since I spoke to her for more than a moment."

Okuni seemed calmer, and for the most part, she was.

He was glad about the choice she had made. It would give her a chance to remember some happier memories he hoped. She seemed to have relaxed a bit and that was good.

"Sounds like a good choice," he said encouragingly.

Okuni spoke with the pink-haired woman for a moment and seemed very, very happy at some news that she heard, even giving her a hug before turning back to Gipo. "What do you want? Everything here is good, unless there's something new I'm not aware of."

It was nice to see her happy.

"The best black coffee with double sugar," he said to her with a wink. "Do they serve cannoli? I'm partial to chocolate chip cannoli."

It was fun to be silly every now and then too.

They had the cannoli, so she asked for that as well as the coffee he'd said and some for herself - two milks, one sugar. Okuni kept smiling as she sat down across from him.

"Wouldn't have expected you to have a sweet tooth," she teased.

He laughed again, "I like to keep people guessing?" He said it as a question, challenging her to continue trying to figure him out.

She shrugged and sipped her coffee when her friend set the mugs down in front of them. "Keeping people guessing is only fun when you're not the one doing the guessing." Okuni wondered idly what he'd think of the drink.

He considered what she had said carefully yet rejected it on it's face. To him keeping people guessing could make things more interesting for both sides. At least at the start he amended to himself.

"So you don't like the added challenge of seeing around others' facades? I find it an interesting game myself, as long as it doesn't go on for too long. Everyone has their secrets. The ones we choose to keep well guarded? It's usually for a good reason."

"The other things can mostly tell the story well enough but to make them immediately obvious? Why would I want to make getting to know me so boring."

He picked up the mug in front of him and breathed in strongly before taking his first mouthful. She was right, her friend most definitely knew her business. "This is wonderful," he said contentment clear in his voice. "You can tell your friend she has a new customer." He smiled at her again and continued to enjoy the brew.

There was a thin line between fun and interesting. She stayed on the side of interesting as far as her professional life went, but hadn't moved beyond that into fun in quite a long time. Okuni gave Gipo a smile that could mean any number of things as she thought of her words.

"Something interesting doesn't have to be fun. And what I take interest in might not be the thing that someone chooses to change from day to day, but what stays constant underneath the rest of the games people will inevitably play with each other. Like the way a man who seems to place no faith in anyone believes in another who for all intents and purposes should be dead." He might not know all of what she meant, but maybe it would give him another thread to chase for a while.

He sat quietly watching her. There was a depth there he hadn't encountered for quite a while and it was doubly intriguing that she seemed to know how to play the game as well as he thought he did.

That it didn't have to be fun for her all the time spoke well of her too. Such depth of connection was a rare thing between two who had just met. Not that he was going to fool himself either.

"So you can enjoy without frivolity then? See the depth beneath the surface? A rare gift these days when so many are only looking for instant gratification."

It was obvious they were both used to playing and being played with for reasons personal, professional, and out of their control. But whether or not they'd keep it at games remained to be seen.

For now, she'd keep her distance and see if his interest in her was simply because of her past connections or for some other reason. "Instant gratification is for those starting out in life. I've learned to be patient." Okuni didn't look her age and considered herself lucky for that.

She was becoming more and more intriguing to him as they talked. Patience was a virtue he had also learned to cultivate. There was something to be said for exploring life more slowly. So he decided to ask about some of her interests.

"Do you like music or theater? I hear there's much of both going on in the piazza between Sagre delle Zeppole and New Year's Eve. We can possibly take some of that in together. Or would you perhaps prefer to view the triathlon or the soccer tournament?"

((OOC - FYI Sagre delle Zeppole is Dec 29th))

"I try my hand at acting every now and then, and I enjoy going to plays to see those more talented than I am." More talented on the stage, at least. "Music is sometimes fun and sometimes boring, depending on the mood of the audience and the musicians. Watching sports for hours on end gets boring."

Okuni felt a small, satisfied thrill at his vague offer to spend more time together. It meant that the deliberate slip in her role earlier had been perhaps a very wise choice.

So she was an actress also. Upon reflection he realized that made sense. Her profession demanded she be comfortable in a variety of roles. He was beginning to hope he was not seeing too much of her roleplaying capailities right now however.

"Then I will check into the schedule further and let you know. Is there someplace else you would like to go this evening or would you rather just remain here and talk?"

How much of today was an act would be for him to wonder about, for him to be curious about, and if that curiosity grew enough, he would want to see her again. That was Okuni's assessment of things to this point. And although part of her genuinely wanted to continue speaking with Gipo, there were other things - prior loyalties - that demanded her attention.

"Actually, I have something else I need to do for my employer this evening and I should get going to take care of it. We'll have to speak more another day."

Of course he had to expect that such a thing would happen. He realized his choices were either to be comfortable with that for the time being or not take things any further and he chose the former. At least for now it really was his only option.

"Thank you then, I really had a wonderful time this evening. I will get in touch with you regarding the theater events as soon as I can find a schedule. Perhaps we might even see each other again before the festival begins."
