As much as I had hoped to avoid this situation, I suppose it cannot be helped.  As new I am to Reggio Calabria, I'm in need of housing as well as employment.  I have extensive of experience in negotiations and am fluent in Japanese, Chinese, Russian, and all of the Romance languages ( Read more... )

I appreciate the compliment, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere. You, perchance, wouldn't happen to know of anyone who is in need of my skills?

Mm. We deal with foreign businessmen all the time. I'm not so bad with the Romance languages, and I'm learning uh, the basic honorifics for Japanese but I'm pretty much fucked when it comes to other things, and I know my boss'd uh. Appreciate it. If we had a translator around.

Honestly? Bloody hell, you have no idea how much that's music to my ears.

As for foreign businessmen, I have plenty of experience. In fact, in my previous profession, that was one of my primary responsibilities. I also have a background in sales, networking, and minor forms of subterfuge.

What do you and your boss exactly do, if I may ask?

Really? Honestly, I'm surprised no one's snapped you up already. Lucky me, I suppose. I've always had good timing.

Subterfuge, hmm? Oh my. I'm starting to think you might be better than I could have hoped.

Oh, you could say we're ...entrepreneurs.

Well it seems people in this town don't take kindly to "outsiders" if it were. Employers all have a pre-conceived notion of whether you're worth the time or not just based on your last name. Or at least...that's how it appears on the outside.

Entrepreneurs, you say? That's lovely, my former employers were as well. I'm not sure if you've done relations with us in the past, but the Lazarey Syndicate -- perhaps that rings a bell? I was one of their envoys until recently.

[ ooc :: the Lazarey Syndicate is a Russian-based family crime syndicate that operates out of Russia. They specialize mostly in selling political secrets and large weapons dealing with terrorist cells and military coup groups ]

Yeah, you'll find that happens. There are some of us that appreciate talent over the name, however.

Ah, that explains the Russian, then. I believe we've done some dealings with them, they're certainly in my books.

Perhaps you have, and I wouldn't be surprised, given the reputation of the families in this city. Do you mind if I ask your affiliation? Or would that be too forward?

I assume that if you've had dealings with the Lazarey, you know all about discretion. I hear they're practically uncivilized over there! You've still got all your fingers, haven't you?

This is all to say that I don't mind at all, and that the answer to your question is that I am a bookkeeper for the Monacello family. Though my unofficial responsibilities extend far beyond that.

Discretion, dear sir, is my middle name. And yes, ten fingers, ten toes -- all intact and fully functioning.

Your candor is quite refreshing, to say the least. My name is Sark -- Julian Sark, to be precise. I have heard of your family -- its reputation for viciousness and efficiency precedes it. And who might you be, then, my little bookkeeping friend?

Well well, aren't you the clever one? I must say, I'm impressed, Mister Sark.

Eh, a lot of people actually do just call me Bookman, but Rabi'll do fine. Since it's my name.

I try my best to be clever, Rabi, yes. Better to be clever in this business, than dead, don't you find?

Before we proceed any further, I must tell you that I have come to Reggio Calabria on personal business. Help from your family in the matter would put me in your debt. Is that being too forward, or is there a possibility that House Monacello would aid me in exchange for services?

Mm, you said it.

Unfortunately, my dear Mister Sark, I'm afraid I can't offer you an authoritative answer to your question. My boss is very easy to talk to, fortunately. I could...arrange something?

Tell me, do you like tea?

My dear boy, of course I like tea -- as any red-blooded Briton should, I would say. I would like very much to meet your employer, though I would not want you to think I am merely a social climber. Since he is your boss, will you be there as well? I would very much like to thank the one who has single-handedly turned the tides of my bad fortune.

Oh. Well, yes. Of course I... I go where he goes, but honestly, I'm no one of consequence. I just keep my eyes open, that's all. Well, eye.

Anyway! Like I said, a man of your talents shouldn't go to waste.

Oh my. Modesty? In a Monacello? You are a rare bird, aren't you, Rabi "Bookman"? Your boss must be lucky to have you, as am I. Your watchful eye may just save my skin. I insist you allow me to buy you a pint.
