Genis first starts off as being Lloyd's right man. He feels responsible when Lloyd gets kicked out of the village of Iselia because it was his visits to Marble at the Human Ranch that caused the destruction of Iselia. But even though Genis blamed himself, everyone else blamed Lloyd because he was the one spotted at the Human Ranch. Therefore, out of guilt and devotion, Genis sticks by Lloyd's side and does his best to help him out through thick and thin.

However, as the game progresses, character development happens! Genis becomes more worldy sees half elves be repressed again and again and begins to develop a bitter taste in his mouth towards humans. So later in the series he's driven to stop his race from being oppressed. This actually leads him down two different paths: Mithos' path and Lloyd's path, since they both have different ideas of how to stop the discrimination against half elves. From the canon point I've chosen for Genis he hasn't quite figured out this answer for himself just yet. But at least by this point Genis is starting to think for himself and develop his own motivations based on his experiences with discrimination instead of living his life based on guilt. It's a step forward in my opinion even if his current hatred of humans is wrong.

I've already gone pretty indepth about Genis' relationship with Lloyd so I'll go into everyone else. Besides Lloyd, his closest friend is Colette whom along with Lloyd he's known since childhood. He takes on a more protective and worrying role towards her since she's so clumsy and she tends to disregard her own well being. She returns the favor, worrying over him once in a skit that he may be getting homesick. He's also very supportive of his friend and tries to help Colette in any way he can. However, the difference between Genis and Colette's relationship compared to Lloyd and Collete's is that Genis and Colette have much more of a sibling type relationship.

Another very important relationship to Genis is his relationship with Raine, his older sister. The two care for each other very much as Raine pretty much single handedly raised him. It's not as if Genis can remember but from his canon point he knows that Raine came to Sylvarant and disguised the two as full elves so that Genis could have a peaceful life. The fact that Raine really tried for Genis' sake, I think, is really important to Genis. He even goes as far in one skit to call Raine his mother.

Raine acts much more like a mother to Genis. For example, she often keeps him in line by giving him a swift smack to the back of the head when he gets over excited, overly childish, or immature for his own good. However, without Genis, Raine would be just as lost since Genis does the cooking and laundry between the two. Raine also embarrasses Genis on occasion because she is over enthusiastic (to the point of eccentricity) over ruins and other archeological finds. He actually went as far to hide this side from his friends! But, over all, the two really appreciate each other and they don't do very well separated. At one point Raine leaves the party and Genis actually becomes upset because she didn't tell him where she was going.

Another very important relationship that Genis has is the one between him and Mithos, the game's main antagonist. Mithos first disguises himself as the only survivor of Ozette after it is burned down. Genis and Mithos bond right away because they are both half-elves. Even when Genis is faced with hard evidence that Yggdrasil is Mithos he keeps it to himself, choosing to trust in Mithos. When Mithos says that he used Genis he's left confused and beside himself. While he wants to believe in Lloyd's vision of a new world he also sees Mithos' point of view as a fellow half elf and he can't fault his actions. From the canon point I've chosen for Genis he's still struggling with this choice.

The other relationships in the party are less expanded on but I'll talk about each of them briefly. The most obvious one is his relationship with Presea, which appears to be a one sided crush. Genis drools at the side of the mouth at her and presents her with gifts but Presea seems to be oblivious to his feelings. It also doesn't help that while Presea looks to be 12 she's actually 28. There is some evidence that Presea thinks of Genis as a child instead of a love interest. Besides that though the two seem to have a good relationship and Presea does think highly of Genis as a friend.

Genis and Zelos have a more antagonistic relationship to start out with. Genis becomes irritated with Zelos' flirtations ways and Zelos finds Genis to be an annoying brat. As the storyline progresses the two seem to become more familiar with each other and become friends. But the two still do butt heads occasionally. From Genis' canonpoint Zelos has betrayed the party so Zelos in game is going to be met with hostility that normally would not be present in game.

Genis seems to respect both Kratos and Regal for the same reasons, the two both being calm, knowledgeable, and valuable in combat. Genis is slightly jealous of Regal because he is close to Presea but this does not strain their friendship in the slightest. Also, Genis is slightly distrustful of Sheena at first but the two eventually become friends. Genis has the least interaction with Sheena in game so it's hard to say much about their relationship other than that.
