Elle had avoided the welcome because she didn't have anybody coming and why bother? It was still hurting that her father hadn't said he'd come. She was sure there was a reason, though, a reason that had nothing to do with her.

She needed to cheer up, she really did. So she figured she'd go to one of the few friends she'd made. Something had her going to Hayley rather than the other Elle, though. She knocked at Hayley's door and waited.

It took a moment, but Hayley cracked open the door. Her eyes were swollen and puffy from crying, but she was grinning, a little too widely.

"Oh, hi Elle," she said.

Hayley opened the door the rest of the way. "Oh, I've just been redecorating, that's all."

Over Hayley's bed was a few tattered remains of photos and newspaper clippings, her bedside trashcan filled with crumpled paper.
