virginia dare
the gentleman took leave of the king
and set sail on his vessel.
the ocean thrashed the boat, but did not sink it.
when he arrived, there was a fetid air
accumulating, high above the swamps,
crippling the tree leaves.
his daughter gave birth there,
and yet he still left her, and when he came again
did not attempt to find her.
jamestown church
the ghosts were saddled
and ridden away; the church
burnt to the ground. no one returned.
after, they took the bricks for salvage,
and built a wall around the old foundation.
now we stare at a replica
and fervently take photographs.
i sit, with the atlantic wind assaulting me,
examining the orange lichens
on the ancient bricks.
