Two little people take on a big city

Yes, I realize I have not posted in years. Well, certain other people have not either, so there. You know who you are, because you're probably not reading this.

Jessica came to visit last Wednesday. To be perfectly honest, I hadn't realized how far away I was from home until a little piece of it visited me last week. I realize that meeting new people is something that's really part of this experience. But I've found myself really lonely sometimes here. It was so nice to have someone there who I knew was really and truly there for me (and not even in the sense that she was there to visit me, but the always there to support me sense). Someone who I didn't have to explain myself to. Someone who I had stories with. Where we could just talk. For hours. And we did.

We had dinner in the Innere Stadt, and saw all the pretty buildings lit up. We took a tour of the catacombs of Stephansdom, which was a mixture of seriously creepy and really fascinating (a jigsaw puzzle of bones? really?). We went to the Wien Museum, and happened to run into a huge exhibit of period dresses there, which made Jessica extremely happy. We went to a heurigen and had wine one night and to Zanoni & Zanoni and had HUGE gelato creations another night. We walked through the Naschmarkt and bought various things for lunch, including plenty of Sturm, which we ate in Stadtpark. We spent quite a few hours in the Imperial Apartments of the Hofburg, and then another few hours having intellectual conversations in a cafe over Sachertorte (very Viennese). We went to the opera, and saw La Boheme, which was amazing. Five operas, and counting.

It was basically five days of the best things about Vienna. With one of the best people I know. And yet, I still think of that pillow that sits (or used to sit) on one of my chairs in the living room, embroidered with the words The best is yet to come. Maybe that's what I love about this place. That I feel like every day could just be so amazing.
