Why waste money on psychotherapy when you can listen to the B Minor Mass? Michael Torke
I love this city.
I love the buildings. You have no idea how long it's going to take me get over the idea that they're all old. And beautiful. I look up at the ceiling right now in IES, and am awed. The main staircase at the center, with it's carpeted steps, marble columns, abundant statues (and banister that is asking to be slid down) is amazing. I cannot believe I'm here five days a week. I can't believe that this building is still used, and completely functioning. The ballroom is a dream. Don't even get me started on the rest of this city.
I love the tranquility. There are some amazing parks in this city. And they don't feel at all like Central Park or the lakefront at home. You're just there. No schedule, no reason to hurry off, no reason to leave. And then there's the Vienna Woods, which is a huge wooded area on the outskirts of the city, with huge hills with glorious views of the city. And the Donauinsel, the artificial island in the middle of the Danube. Haven of bikers and nude sunbathers.
I love the tradition. Lederhosen, sold at the flea market at the Nashmarkt. Heurigen, little wine-tasing places on the outskirts. The vineyards are actually right there. They have traditional Austrian dishes (I found out how amazing sauerkraut is), and the atmosphere is just so cute, traditional, and relaxed. Everyone is there to enjoy themselves. Same with Kaffeehauses. No hurry. That would be sacreligious to the Viennese.
I love the music. There's so much of it. So many composers houses to visit. Schubert's, right behind where I live. Saw three of Beethoven's - which means there are only 23 more in the city to visit. The Central Cemetery, where Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss Sr and Jr, and Wolf are all buried - and I'm sure I missed someone else's grave while I was there. And all that's still here. The Musikverein. The Staatsoper. Oh my god, the Staatsoper. Even standing, it is fantastic. Faust, which we saw on Saturday, was amazing. I am going many many more times. Sunday I went to Augustinerkirche, where they have a mass and inbetween the blessings, they sing the mass, with a full orchestra and choir. How it was meant to be performed. And all of this... everyone loves it. And appreciates it.
I think I have run out of words to describe just how much I love this place.
