So I've been in Austin for a few days, and I have a sort of mixed impression of the place.
I really don't think I'll get accustomed to the series of men honking at me, yelling out their window, leering, and catcalling. I really, really don't. Definitely the biggest negative I can find so far. It's EVERYWHERE I go outside of downtown. I'm lucky to walk 100 meters without some sort of incident. Infuriating, and I can do NOTHING about it, except for possibly flipping them off. I've convinced myself that's immature and ill-advised... but it's still quite tempting.
Otherwise, a cool city! I found a friendly little coffee shop near the house, and I've been going to enjoy the air conditioning and catch up on e-mail.
I've also met a lot of neat people. Just finished talking to a Portuguese-Swedish man who wants to start a job at Cornell, and who does capoeira. What are the chances?! The next door neighbors are a sweet twenty-something couple with cute dogs, and I met a nice guy in capoeira class who's also going to be a 1L at UT Law come Monday. Things have gone well so far, but I wish Peter had been here to explore the city with me. He gets here tonight.
Come visit Austin! Just don't wear short skirts.
