The Fire Blast hit the Wing Attack and the force of the combined attacks causeda small, but loud explosion. Dust rose up in plumes, covering the wooded area. Unable to see anything, Di stumbled forward, tossing a pokéball in the direction her target was seconds ago. It saw the flash of light that signaled the Pokémon's capture, but just as quickly the ball burst open. By the time Jake found his friend in the dust, the girl was sitting in the dirt, holding the remains of the fractured Poke Ball while the cries of the pidgeyechoed in its ears as it flew away,
"Creep! Get away, this is unnatural!"
Jake sat down next to his depressed friend, patting it on the back. Di looked up at him with eyes wet from some sort of moisture that begun coming out after her last failure. Jake tried to smile, but the fact that his new partner had just failed to catch her fifth Pokémon in a row kept him from smiling with full enthusiasm.
"Just keep trying Di, it's harder for you because you have to use my cyndaquil to weaken the Pokémon. Once you catch your own it will get easier."
Di knew it wasn't inexperience keeping it from catching a Pokémon, but the fact that it actuallywas a Pokémon. No self-respecting Pokémon would let itself be caught by another;it was unnatural and wrong on many, many levels. It stifled a sob, only relieved by the fact that Jake's cyndaquildidn't seem to care it was a Ditto. The depression ended suddenly when Jake pulled something out of his backpack, swinging it directly into Di's face.
"Uhmm!"
Di grunted, trying to push it away from her face. Jake laughed, and pulled the sandwich back away from his friend's face. Jack figured it'd be a good time to take a break, they'd began trying to catch a Pokémon right after getting Di's license which was almost three hours ago.
"I figured it'd be a good idea to eat, I still have packed lunches left from my mom," Jack explained, as he unwrapped his sandwich and dropped the other into Di's lap.
Di picked up the baggy, holding it up against the light to get a good look at this new food called 'sandwich'. Cautiously pulling the bread out of the plastic, Di was careful not to drop its new delicacy. It felt the soft bread with its finger, testing the bounciness and observing the texture. The slow and cautious process of trying this new food ended abruptly, when Jack lunged, shoving half the sandwich into Di's open mouth.
Smiling as Di gagged and swallowed the huge bite Jake said cheerily, "It's not poisonous. My mom made 'em, not me."
Di rolled its eyes again, but ate the sandwich at a faster and more enthusiastic pace once the Ditto realized the sandwich was safe and good. It had been forever since it'd eaten anything really substantial. Seeing Jake already finished his sandwich, it swallowed the remaining piece whole, trying to seem normal and eat at an average pace.
Laughing, Jake wiped some mayonnaise from his mouth and added, "You don't have to eat as fast as me, I eat really, really fast. I'm a teenage boy after all."
Not understanding the comparison, the Ditto simply smiled and pretended to think Jake's comment about adolescent males was humorous. Jake looked pleased with himself when Di fake-laughed, not realizing his companion was a Pokémon who didn't understand the humor behind a teenage boy's metabolism.
Jake returned his cyndaquil, telling it "Good job, buddy!" before recalling his tired Pokémon into its ball. Di looked at Jake wishfully, wondering if it would ever catch a Pokémon to start its journey to become a master.
Jake searched through his bag for a moment, pulling out what looked like a 6-inch long, rectangle box. He clicked the box open and handed the contents to Di. It felt the smooth wood of the unknown object. It seemed to be a pole of sorts, with collapsible joints that locked out to make the pole longer and unlocked to collapse and store it in the box. Attached to one end was clear, plastic string that was coiled onto a wooden cylinder. Jake took something else out of the box and handed it to the Ditto, the new addition was a clear box full of colored feather and small metal hooks. Jake was giving Di a fishing rod!
Di looked up with confusion, as Jake smiled and explained, "Since you're having a hard time catching Pokémon, I thought you could fish for one!"
After teaching Di how to set up the fishing rod and how to cast it so she didn't hook anybody by mistake, Jake laid against a tree and watched his new companion try to fish a Pokémon. Watching the small girl cast her rod and methodically reel it in, Jake wondered how old his new friend was. She seemed very young in appearance, except for her - at this thought Jake blushed madly - development in the chest area. Her hair was wispy, short and blonde, something you'd expect see on a very young child and her eyes were sky blue. Intrigued, he pulled out her new pokédex and trainer's ID. Her pokédex was an older model, brand new but still old. Of course, Jake did get his from Professor Elm so it would be the newest style.
Her pokédex was bulky and a shiny, almost silver metal with a black-and-white screen and large faded white buttons. In contrast, Jake's was slim with a matte finish that gave it a professional look, along with a brand new touch screen. He was really happy Elm had given his nephew the pokédex for free, getting a nice pokédex cost more money that Jake had. Jake eyed over Di's trainer card, still shiny and perfect as it was when it was printed a couple hours ago. The birth year was left out, in case a card got stolen, but it said that her birthday was April 17th, which had just passed a month ago. He wondered how old she was.
"Ditto!"
Jake turned to Di, who had cried out almost wordlessly to get his attention, although it thought it strange that her scream sounded like Ditto. The rod was tugging into the water, small waves created when the Pokémon underneath pulled away.
"Reel her in, really slowly and carefully, Di!"
Jake shouted, throwing Di's trainer card into his bag and running to help his struggling friend. Throwing his hands over her own on the rod, he helped Di tug against the struggling Pokémon.
As soon as he saw the dark shape of a Pokémon appear below the surface, Jake handed Di a pokéball, telling her through the panic, "Just throw it right at 'em. It'll catch that fish Pokémon…"
Jake was going to say "for sure", but with all of Di's bad luck with Pokémon so far, he didn't want to jinx his friend. Instead, he bit his lip, grasped her hands tighter under his. Holding the small girl in place, Jake closed his eyes for a moment and prayed to Arceus.
Di struggled against the raging Pokémon, gathering up enough strength to take on hand off the reel and grab the pokéball in Jake's outstretched hand. With the rod shaking wildly under the control of its left hand, the Ditto quickly threw the pokéball. It made contact with the dark spot and a flash of light blinded the companions for a moment. Di looked away, tears already forming, and gathering up the courage to check if the Pokémon had been caught. Bobbing against the shoreline was a pokéball, intact, and center beeping red for its trainer to register the newly caught Pokémon with their pokédex.
Di scrambled to grab the pokéball and then ran to the old pokédex, as if by not acting quickly the Pokémon would escape. Pressing the blinking center to the sensor on the back of the pokéball, a black-and-white image of a small round Pokémon materialized onscreen. Squinting and adjusting the angle of the unlighted screen, Jake and Di were finally able to make out the words: Poliwag, the Tadpole Pokémon. Clicking the information button, the pokédex whirled to life and spoke in a thick mechanical voice, "The direction of its belly spiral differs by area. The equator is thought to have an effect on this."
Intrigued, Jake pressed the size button over Di's shoulder. The two looked at the small Pokémon's size and weight. Showing Di where it could view its own Pokémon, Jake and Di looked at the poliwag's statistics and current Experience Points. After a couple minutes had passed of just researching the new Pokémon, Jake was the first to speak.
"Well go on then, let's see your new Pokémon."
Jake urged over Di's shoulder, excited to see the poliwag his companion had finally caught. Di smiled back, but paused for a couple seconds. It knew the Pokémon would rebel the second it was released from the ball. Taking a deep breath, Di hit the round white button and threw the opening ball into the air, saying in a bright voice,
"Poliwag!"
Di knew that it could replicate the sounds of other Pokémon easily, and excitedly used this trait to call out her Pokémon and not seem more mute to Jake than it already did.
Out of a burst of light shot a small, rounded figure with stubby little feet. The poliwag turned to its new trainer happily, large beaver-like tail wagging. It stopped short, the surprise in its eyes easily read by both Di and Jake. After staring for a moment at its new trainer, it yelled,
"What the hell is this?"
Jake and Di shot back, stumbling over each other and ending up into a tangled mess on the ground. Jake's heart was rapidly thumping from the surprise of hearing the Pokémon yell suddenly, while Di's heart was thumping because the poliwag surprised it and now begun to use language Di hadn't known existed. As they untangled themselves, the poliwag jumped and screeched in a way that made the cute rubbery animal seem not at all cute. Jake was crawling quickly to retrieve the fallen pokéball, while Di found herself cornered against a tree.
"What is this? You'd better let me go at once, stupid Ditto!"
The poliwag shot harmless looking bubbles at Di, soaking its stolen clothing while charging closer to the Ditto. Di tried to say something, but Jake's crawling to the pokéball caught its eye. It couldn't talk Pokémon now, Jake would know it was an imposter.
Desperate to distract the angered Pokémon, Di choked out,
"Whot?"
If the poliwag had been angry before, it was furious now. Jumping from foot to foot and occasionally swinging its beaver-like tail dangerously close to Di's body it yelled, "What? Meowth got your tongue, Ditto? You think you're so clever but-"
With a bright flash of energy, Jake returned the enraged poliwag to its ball. Breathing heavily from the sudden confrontation, Di and Jake flopped down on opposite sides of the pokéball. Jake pondered why the Pokémon was so angry - maybe it had babies nearby - whileDi simply tried to find the words to explain what was going on to the pissed water type. Feeling overwhelmed by the realities of her plan, Di felt itself leaking from the eyes again. Jake was the first to look up from the pokéballand was surprised by the tears falling from Di's face. Scooting over next to her, he patted her knee softly and tried to think of something comforting to say.
"Whot?"
Jake looked up, surprised Di had spoken first. He hadn't known her very long, but she was definitelythe quiet type. Her voice was rough from crying and her lips pursedas if she was working out the sounds in her mind before speaking again.
"Whot is wrong wit meh?"
Her voice was quiet and lisped, from crying Jake assumed. Healways felt awkward when comforting his older sisters and seeing someone younger than him so distressed didn't help his case of foot in mouth.
"Pokémon must just not like you."
A small whimpering cry broke out from Di, and Jake knew immediately that he said the wrong thing again. They sat in silence, apart from Di's muffled crying, for a couple minutes.
Clearing his throat before trying again, "Why don't we look around the town before dealing with your poliwag again? It'll be fun!"
Her face was stained with tears, but Di still smiled and nodded at Jake's idea of distraction. He helped his friend up from the ground and handed her the pokéball.Herfingers slowly curved around it, as if she was contemplating throwing it out. Jake watched her with interest, a flicker of unreadable emotions flying across her face. She then set the pokéball in his bag and began walking. 'Di is a strange one,'Jake thought, 'but I think she will make a great travelling companion.'
