The teacher stood outside the Poke Mart, arms crossed, with a look of embarrassment and shame on her easy to read features. She hesitantly dialed her phone, ignoring the stiff breeze threatening to blow her skirt up. She bit her top lip and pushed a lock of dyed blonde hair out of her eyes, waiting for the phone to be picked up. Hearing a greeting on the other line, the woman cleared her throat and managed to croak out,

"Hey, sis."

"You sound upset, did Trevor break up with you?"

"No, we're actually doing great right now…"

Rose cleared her breath, summoning every ounce to strength she had to actually tell her sister what happened. She spoke with a quickness, trying to get everything out before she wimped out.

"..but that isn't why I'm calling."

The urgency in her sister's voice turned on alarms in Linda's brain as she took a break from consoling her sobbing daughter to talk to her sister.

"Is something wrong with the… package I sent to you?"

"Yeah, about that…"

A sob broke through the background of the call, as Ana cried out about her lost Ditto. She collapsed into her mother's lap, and Linda said with fake cheerfulness into the phone,

"What's up?"

Rose knew her sister was an amazing actress, but she wasn't sure how her perfect older sister would react to the disastrous consequences of her actions.

"The supply truck is gone."

"Gone?"

Linda's voice cracked through at least three octaves with her single word question, receiving a strange look from her daughter. After assuring her daughter it didn't have to do with her runaway Ditto and sending the distraught girl to bed, Linda sat on the couch and rephrased her question with cold logic,

"How could it be gone?"

"Team Rocket. They jacked the truck for the pokebals and other supplies going to the Poke Mart."

"But Ditto was being transported on that truck in its pokebal."

Linda whispered, almost hysterically into the phone, unable to control her panic that she had actually lost her daughter's pet. She planned to "find" it later after her daughter outgrew the Pokémon Master obsession, but never to actually get rid of it. That's why she's sent it to her sister in Violet City.

"Yeah. I went out to help the police, but nothing was found. Just some busted supplies that fell out when the crooks jacked the truck. No Ditto."

"Oh my God. It's never been in the wild, I bought it from a breeder. It'll die!"

Unable to feed her sister fake-hopefulness, Rose sighed and replied to her sister's cries with the only thing about Pokémon she hadn't learned in college, something she felt in her very bones.

"There's no way it'll survive."

Blackness all around, and fear and loneliness was all it felt. The Ditto shook and cried, but couldn't free itself from the Pokebal it had been trapped in by the maternal human. It wanted its human, the girl with the blank eyes and golden hair. But instead, the Pokémon was trapped and unknowingly being shipped to Violet City. Time had no place in the circular prison, only sleep and waiting. The Ditto gave up, surrendering to the blackness surrounding itself, wondering if it's unseeing trainer's world was like this.

Knives shearing themselves into the Ditto's eyes violently and it was sent flying across a clearing into a tree. Spinning through the air, the pink blob saw a truck zoom away as its eyes adjusted to the light. It was aware in enough time to see the tree before it hit. Stars shot around its vision, as the Ditto made contact with the plant and then the dirt. Crying, it picked itself up off the dirt and tried to figure things out. But nothing made sense. Her human was sad because she couldn't be a master, and the other human wanted the girl to stop hurting. So the brown haired one had trapped it in a ball, but nothing accounted for why the Ditto was in the middle of a clearing, hurt and alone.

It wandered around, unsure of its location and to injured to care to be curious about its surroundings. It couldn't measure the time it spent wandering for help, it could have been an hour of half a day. Hunger growled in its stomach, but all the Pokémon could find was water, water, water, and more water. It felt as though it should be thankful for that, but the gnawing sensation in its stomach stopped all gratitude for the ever-present supply of water. The Ditto finally heard a human voice, although it was slightly lower than her human's. It peered through a bush to see the root of the noise, and saw another human, a male it noted, petting a Cyntaquil. The dark-haired boy was speaking and the Ditto had nothing else to do but listen.

"It's kind of boring out here, I guess I'm just used to having mom or somebody else around all the time. I guess I'm so lonely, Cyntaquil. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I have you. But I wish I had a human friend to come with me, someone who wanted to be a Pokémon master too." The Ditto looked at the sad child, the cogs in its brain spinning faster and faster. It could pretend to be human, it had shape-shifted many times for the amusement of its human. It could pretend to be its person, and get those thingies needed to face the Elite Four. It could get some Pokémon, maybe, and be a Master. And then it could give everything to its human. It would be easy to find her once it was human and a good battler. It was a half-baked idea to be sure, but the Ditto was hungry and desperate enough to try anything.

So, it began to shape-shift. The Ditto breathed in and out, focusing itself on a mental image of its human. A girl. With hair. And two eyes and a nose and a pretty mouth. And five fingers on each appendage. The Ditto shifted, bulging out and shrinking until it got the shape right. It was so proud of itself, but the fingers were too fat and the hair too thick. But something else was off too, the whole body was pink and soft, with no colored flaps to cover the reproduction parts. It looked like the human when it showered every night, when it liked to cover itself up when anyone else saw it. A strange heat burned in its cheek as the Ditto looked at the boy naked, unable to move. It moved an arm, and the boy looked up, startled by the noise. He couldn't see the Ditto yet, but would when he walked over. Something like a survival instinct hit the Ditto and it ran, the long human legs wobbly and flimsy. The Ditto tripped and fell, scratching itself. Pushing itself up with strength only found in human arms, the Ditto propelled itself forward through some bushes. Unable to stop, the Ditto ran and ran, using the human legs to put as much distant between itself and the male.

Losing the long appendages and the hair, the Ditto morphed back into itself, running as fast as it could. It felt a strange sensation well up, something of anger and shyness. At least its face didn't burn like before when it saw the boy. Just the strange feeling was left, making the Ditto pant and want to throw up its lunch. Then, just like that, the sensation was replaced by one of sadness. It had failed its human, she would never be happy now. It was lost too, all alone and unable to find food. It only ate from a bowl full of round pellets before, and sometimes a round blue colored berry. It was hurt too, both from being thrown around earlier, and from tripping while transformed. The Ditto wanted to find its human, but wandering around in the dimming woods was not a good idea, even for a Pokémon.

It cried softly to itself, thankful no other Pokémon were nearby to bother the confused and hurt Pokémon. It curled up into a ball in the crook of some tree roots, and fell into a fitful sleep.
