"There can be no more doubts about Georgia. The fifth-ranked Bulldogs bullied No. 8 Tennessee and cruised to a 26-14 victory in Knoxville. The victory puts Georgia firmly in control of the SEC East and should put them on the short list of national title contenders."

Never have I read three sweeter sentences.

It's just football.

No, it really isn't. Football is a way of life. It's something to look forward to. It's something that you put your all into. It's a passion. It's a reason to wake up early on Saturday. It's a reason to paint your entire body.

i'm with nate, obviously. college football is a glorious thing and maybe you can't understand it until you've lived it.

does berry have a football team?

Only for a fraction of the population.

I enjoy watching it, and, to an extent, talking about it, but nothing beyond that.

sucks for you, then, because it's one hell of a party.

Considering it's one that I'd just as soon miss, I don't think it sucks for me at all. I've got other things to think about like school.....like schoolwork.

spend every minute of college on schoolwork, and you're not going to have a whole lot of fun stories to tell your grandkids.

and besides, there are many excellent schools with good football teams, the roles of 'football fan' and 'commited student' are not mutually exclusive. there's no reason not to have a good time occasionally, and even if it's not your good time, there's no reason to go around raining on everyone else's parade.

If you really consider "It's just football." as raining on your parade....then maybe you need to grow thicker skin.

I don't need football to have fun

Is it bad that the phrase "mutually exclusive" makes me think of set theory?

yes, mattie, you're a parade-rainer. a grinch. a scrooge, if you will.

and i'm sure we'll all very proud that you don't need football to have fun, but neither do the rest of us - it just IS fun.

and yes, it is bad.

Remember that fun is relative. There is no way you can ever conclude that football is universally fun.

I've been to two non-football schools, lived a semester at tech, and spent a few years in Athens. There is not one shred of doubt that people at UGA love their school more than any students at any other school in the state. A lot of people at tech are just miserable with the place because it is so hard. People at the commuter schools and smaller schools just really think of it as school. It isn't really anything special. It is just another small part of their day. Students and alumni of UGA are rabid about it. They love everything about the place. They love the campus, the food, football, downtown, the atmosphere; they can even love living in a crappy dorm for a year before moving up to the new village. Almost every student on campus wears some sort of spirit shirt at least about 3 times a week. Everyone has some greek symbol and/or uga symbol on their car. Most alumni visit Athens fairly often, or wish they could. You could also just look at how much the average person donates to the university. Pretty much every single ( ... )

I stopped reading after "There is not one shred of doubt that people at UGA love their school more than any students at any other school in the state," because I refuse to believe blanket generalizations with no backing evidence.

Having gone to a few different schools in no way constitutes as any kind of support for your argument.

uga is pretty f'in sweet.

and there's no way to prove it until you've been here, but it's true. i couldn't be prouder of where i go to school. i love everything about it. i even loved living in that shitty shoebox of a dorm last year. it's not unique to UGA - i'm sure other similar schools like OSU, Michigan, Texas, etc. inspire the same or similar devotion, but you can't understand it until you've been in it.

But saying all this implies that I don't feel the same about my school. I really, honestly do.

I actually strongly feel that Berry is better academically than UGA, and I'm much prouder of that than any of our sports.

yeah yeah yeah, everyone irrationally hates UGA. heard it before. everyone, including people that couldn't get in to UGA, thinks that his or her school is better than UGA. i'm not saying that you couldn't get in, because i'm sure you could, or that berry isn't a good school, because i've never been there, so i wouldn't know (and on a similar note, i would like to know where your personal knowledge of UGA's academic rigor comes from), but everyone that doesn't go here dislikes us for one reason or another. it makes sense, we're the big bully in the neighborhood. we have more students, more hype, etc. you may have a point, i don't know, but it's easy to get sick of hearing the argument in the first place.

I don't have a hatred of UGA at all, I just think that there are a lot of students that are there for the wrong reasons. That's what bothers me most is that students just blindly apply thinking that that's where they want to go, when if they actually looked around, they could probably find something better suited for their wants and needs.

I didn't even apply to UGA because I know I wouldn't have enjoyed myself; it had all the things I was looking to avoid.

And the reason I think Berry is better academically is because it's ranked #2 in the Southeast for comprehensive colleges.
