Anna Sewell wrote one book in her entire life. It took her six years to write it, and she died only five months after it was published, at the age of 57. That book was Black Beauty, an instant best-seller and a catalyst for social reforms.

Margaret Mitchell, despite writing novel-length manuscripts since her teens, had only one book published during her lifetime, when she was 37 -- Gone With the Wind. Within three years it was not only a best-selling book but an award-winning movie.

Nelle Harper Lee has, to date, written only one novel in her lifetime. It took her three and half years to do it. To Kill A Mockingbird is a staple for high school reading lists.
